anyone replaced a timing belt on their car

has anyone replaced their timing belt themselves? i am looking to pick up one of these cars and it will probably have higher miles on it, so i will probably be swapping the timing belt my self. is it a chain or a belt on these. i have a 2000 zx2 that has a chain so i would imagine this would be a chain as well. thanks for any input. how much do the parts go for? how tough is the job?

what engine do you have? i just did mine on a zetec and it was pretty easy. parts cost was about 150 (gates blue belt and gates idler and tensioner). plus i got the timing tools from massive. just take your time and make sure everything is done right. doing the belt on its own probably about 1.5-2 hours. not too sure as i did cams, set valve lash, serp idler and tensioner too, with food/drink breaks took me 6 hours.

x2 on taking your time! Did one on my svt, and it can be a pain. As noted above, you will need at least one of the special tools, which is a TDC pin. With this pin, it makes sure the motor is at Top Dead Center before installing the belt. There is an excellent How-To article on here that explains everything thouroughly!

The SVT/Zetec's use a belt not a chain.

Its not hard to do, just takes time. You may also want to change the water pump, and deffently the tensioner while in there. You wouldn't want to get into it a second time for something stupid.

You will also need this tool http://focus.c-f-m.com/freeshippinga...csvtst170.aspx

It will keep the cams/crank in time while you have the belt off. Basicly what you do it turn the engine to TDC install the tools, replace the belt, remove the tools, then crank the engine by hand two full turns and make sure everything goes back to TDC.

The procedure is not the same as the standard models.
The VCT needs to be set on the intake cam.
If you leave out that step, you'll get a CEL for improper intake cam timing, and the engine will most likely be down on power.

There's tons of threads in this area about how to change it.
See here for example: (There's also a link to the factory replacement procedure)
