Possible VCT going bad?

I have begun to notice a rattle coming from the passenger side of the engine. I removed the upper timing belt cover and cranked the car to get a look to see if anything was loose. Nothing was loose but I did narrow the location down to what I think is coming from the phaser on the intake cam. The rattle begins at idle and is short-lived going up through the RPM range. When I gave it a little throttle with my hand while listening the rattle went away at what I would estimate about 2,000 RPM. Any suggestions on this issue?

Agree the tentioner has a weight on it and if not set correctly or belt getting loose you will get a rapid tap at that area your talking about , this can be adjusted out but check the belt to make sure its in good shape and has been changes like it should be

Tom, are you talking about the accessory belt as well?? I don't remember there being a setting on it. What mistifies me is that the noise goes away as engine revs increase just above idle.

Ok guys, I replaced the accessory belt tensioner as everybody said to do (even though I didnt think that was the problem) and it indeed was not the problem. So, 2 hours in the scorching heat and humidity and $40 later I'm back where I started.

Has anyone else ever heard of the cam phaser going bad in these cars? I really think that's my problem here but I'm obviously not going to just go off on a whim and replace my cams because I think that's the problem.

I've heard of the solenoids going bad all the time... not so much the phasing gear itself. Normally the solenoid will separate into two pieces and cause an oil leak, but I've never heard of one tapping. I, too, would have thought it was the belt tensioner, personally.

Are you doing any work along the coast? I'm in Pascagoula and wouldn't mind taking a look if you're not far away.

Nah I'm not along the coast doing any work. I'm located around Huntsville, AL. I'm almost out of options here...This thing is really bugging me. It's sort of intermittent, I can run the car for an hour and hear nothing when I park it. Then I can run it for 5 mins and it be rattling very noticeably. I'm a pretty decent mechanic when it comes to my own cars but this problem is driving me up the wall. I haven't noticed any loss of power or fuel economy and there is no oil leak around the VCT solenoid. I unplugged the solenoid itself and cranked the car up and still had the rattle...so I'm at a loss right now.
