Question 180* Thermostat

Does anyone knows if using an 180* thermostat on our engines will cause the ecu to "think" the car is still cold?

I have never had any issues and I also run a 65% water 35% coolant mix with water wetter.

What I was wondering is that maybe the ecu sends more gas to get the engine in the "normal" temperature range.

This is what happens when you run a 180* t-stat:

T-stat opens earlier. That's it.

If you don't change your tune, the fans will still come on at stock temperature, which means the 180* t-stat is essentially worthless. The ECU doesn't really know the difference.

If you notice, I said "if you don't change your tune." You need to change when your fans come on to get the benefit of a 180 t-stat. Stock is 198 and 212 or somethin. Tom recommends lowering that to 190 and 200 or around there.

Keep in mind that the fans are only there for idle and low cruise , when you get moving enough for air to come through the raid it will work and help lower the temps even with no tune and a 180, It is best to lower the fans and a tune

Going to a lower temp thurmostat helps with performance , lowers the threashold for spk knock etc.

Thanks Tom, I'm going to replace the thermostat housing with the contour one, so was thinking in throwing a 180 thermostat, does your tune takes care of the fans? I already have it so just wandering.

Yes my tune addresses the fans , Hard to say what the HP/TQ gains would but tut there very small , but there there and lowering the threshold for knocks means less timing our from knock so that also allows more gains in HP/TQ and that could be a lot
