Question Gapping to .060. Whats the benefit?

What is the deal with gapping the copper plugs to .060? I just got em and about to put them in but why gap to .060?

bigger gap = hotter spark. the coil has to produce more volts to jump the extra gap.

A bigger spark also means more of the air/fuel mixture is ignited, resulting in increased efficiency.

Well, I put em in and the car had quite a rumbling sound to it. Then it had a very stinky smell like something was burning. I gapped them the right way. What could be the problem? I don't want to screw up my car.

You probably just gapped them too wide. Not every car will be happy with .060". Try stepping them down to .055". It also depends on your wires... if they're a few years old, it's best to replace them.

Wires aren't old at all. I have the Steeda 8mm ones. I'll try gapping them down. Any solution to that god awful smell and what it is?

The smell was probably fuel getting dumped into your exhaust. When you shorten the gap, the cylinders will fire again which will ignite the fuel, and (hopefully) the smell will go away.

I think it's the cat. I took it to the shop because the 02 sensor went out. It's an easy fix I know, but the flip side is that the car is extremely underpowered and the motor is making a rumbling sound.
