Raising compression?

Has anybody ever tried to bump their compression up to gain power with a smaller headgasket or a shaved head? I have heard that the Zetec doesn't like going over 10.5:1 but I don't know why not. It seems like there would be some gains to be had by raising the CR and getting a good tune. If Toyotas and Hondas can roll off the assembly line pushing over 11:1, why can't we go that high with the SVT engine?

well the svt already has a higher comp then the regular zetecs. you could go the route of swaping out higher comp pistons and rods then shave the head a bit. just i dont see you making alot more hp from this in n/a. just go boost. for he money youll put in machine shop work, tuning, and parts. you can build a decent turbo kit and make 250hp safely to the wheels on a svt. i dont see an N/A build (zetec engine or duratec) on race fuel making this.

Yeah I just looked into it and I don't think the gains would even be worth it. Probably less than 10hp even going all the way up to 11:1 on an otherwise stock engine. Turbo is still the way to go.

Just saying, i have a lot of problems with heat, I have to pull a ton of timing when it gets warm out.

would higher octain fuel help any? ive never messed with really high comp engines. but im guessing with the heat your talking about is resulting in pre det

im using 93

and no not predet. I have to pull more timing than usual to prevent knock because of high intake temps. predet is a whole nother animal.

Yeah, Zetec engine wasn't meant to run high comp. The S2000 runs 11:1 stock and has no problems with knock when it gets hot but that's because Honda engineered it from the factory.

Who really wants to run race gas all the time just because they wanted higher compression?

yeah if you really want to know why start looking up combustion chamber shape and ridges, look at port angles, valve face profiles, piston head profiles, etc etc etc, there are many things in the zetec combustion chamber that cause hotspots and high pressure zones and lead to knock. The SVT pistons and head got rid of many of these things but some of them are built into the architecture theres nothing we can do about it.

I plan on upping the compression in my NA SVT this summer... along with some head work which I hope will help eleviate some of the heat issues..... if not then oh well I tried.

But the head work seems to have helped on the Turbo car so why not try it??
