What's with stealerships and trading an SVT?

I went down to my local VW stealership to check out the new '10 GTI MkVI and when the salesman asked me about what I currently drive, I told him it was an '03 Focus SVT. He then went on and on and on about how I could sell my car on E-Bay and how there were enthusiast groups who would pay top dollar for my car etc.

I NEVER implied I wanted to trade my SVTF and told him I was planning to give it to my niece in a few years, I just wanted to check out the new GTI.

He then insisted that once I buy the GTI, I should have NO problem selling my SVTF, everyone on-line just loves those cars and I should be able to get top dollar.

I'm used to salesmen lying to me and ignoring me but I got the distinct impression that if I tried to trade my SVTF, he'd cancel the sale and get a restraining order against me.

Anyone else have an experience similar to this?

Chances are that the salesman is on vortex and probably checks out thecarlounge...on that forum the svtf is a pretty well liked car from a few threads i've read and from my cousin who frequents that site. So I doubt he's being a douche and i doubt he'd give you a lot in trade in but he is right that there are people out there that would pay a nice amount for an svtf in good condition.

this^^^^ hehe i'm a vwvortex user myself. I never really thought much of the svtf until i heard about on the vwvortex as well as seing one locally at an scca autox event. After it placed 1st in it's class and riding shotgun in that same car that was a blast! Yeah if you want to get the max price obviously selling in to an enthusiast or other private party will be more than any dealership trade in value will offer!

He was just trying to help you out....not everything that comes out of a sales consultant's mouth is a lie. I've been doing it for 11 years now, and the type of dialogue you described is fairly common with me when someone comes in with a vehicle that potentially may be traded in. Many cars are worth more on the street to someone in the "know" than if they were to be traded in, and a clean SVT is one of them. Give the guy a break, he was simply doing his job and trying to do you a favor.

He just wanted you to buy a Volkswagen.

He probably has no clue about any kind of resale value; he was just saying all that so you would GIVE HIM YOUR MONEY.

Thank you Capt. Obvious...he sells VW's and the OP went to look at their products. Of course the sales consultant would want him to buy a VW, that's his job. The OP didn't say anything about any undue pressure to buy a new car, he was simply asking why the sales consultant seemed to be pushing him to sell his car outright vs trading it in.

Yea but he also told him that he'd be giving it to his niece. So if he heard that shouldn't he shut it about trading or selling it?

Maybe he's guilty of being a bit overenthusiastic....poor guy would have been chewed to bits by everyone here had the OP said the guy didn't know what an SVT was. Can't win for trying I guess.
