Ensuring that intake runners properly change length?

Hi,

I think my variable intake runners may be broken on my SVT but I'm not sure. When the changeover occurs does the exhaust tone change considerably or does it just sound louder? Would a broken one cause for a CEL to be thrown? Or have I just gotten used to the higher RPMs power?

Thanks

I think in most cases you'd have a CEL, though I'm not sure that's the case all the time. Mine is broken and I do have a CEL for "intake runner stuck open", but that doesn't necessarily mean yours couldn't be broken without one

There is a slight tone change in the engine when the runners switch over. The exhaust doesn't get any louder...except that you're doing WOT which makes it louder.

You typically will get a CEL if the runners aren't switching though. You can check to see if your DSI lever and cable are still attached. If they are, then you need to look into getting a new IMRC.

start the car and put it in neutral and set the parking brake. pop the hood and give it throttle while under the hood and watch the dsi cable and make sure it works properly, easiest way i know

Thanks for all of the advice. I'm going to check at some point tomorrow and ensure the DSI mechanisms are working.

I guess I feel as though the car's power is much more linear that I would expect from a car that has this sort of thing in place. It gets up and goes well at 4000 RPMs but there doesn't seem to be any increased "Oomph" as the RPMs increase to 7000.

I'm not sure if I'm just expecting too much from the car or if, like I said, I've gotten used to the top-end since owning it.

It's not like the car just blasts off or anything. It's just one feature of many that helps the car go a little bit faster. There is no real "VTECH JUST KICKED IN YO!!!" moment

Well, there's definitely not "VTECH" kicking in because that's the name of a phone...

i have the stock s-tube removed from the air box. there is a slight change in engine noise with the decreased runner length.

Its not so much of a kick in the pants, but more of it keeps pulling through the rpms, unlike my zx3 which stopped at 5.5k rpms.....

With a good tune you shouldnt notice the DSI opening, only on older factory tunes do you here it.

Seeing you have an 04 get a buddy to turn the key to the on posistion (do not start) while you have the hood popped and you should be able to actually here the DSI cycle.

ON my 03 the DSI doesnt cycle until you actually start the car.
