Owners Demographics

I have been a long time member of other car forums and found them quite helpful in the past. I have been lurking and reading as a guest for while and have recently joined so I can post.

I have read some people who have hardly any SVT problems and others who have had what I refer to as the problem child.

So here is the question.

What is average age and/or typical type of owner of many SVTs on this forum?

Am I right to assume the newer SVT's or 1st owners of the SVTs in general were a little more careful in terms of maintaining and driving. I am not too worried about spirited driving as people I know who do such spirited driving and are aware of the calculated risks and are prepared to accept the required costs of driving a car harder than normal commuting.

Being personally aware of turbo cars I have read about several cars in this forum that have significant boost in power by using turbos and SC's. What is the probable accelerated wear factor other issues one should take into account if considering purchase of SVT equipped with an after market unit such a Jackson or Pro Charger?

The other turbo cars I am familiar with have been specifically designed for such use and usually have nikasil hardened liners, forged pistons, and sodium valves. What is the safe threshold of boost and what is the life expectancy of a boost power train if the SVT is driven in an intelligent manner?

Thanks in advance for any answers that people provide.

I guess I'll start. I'm mid forties in age, four kids and have had my SVT three years with no major mechanicals. Bought with 28000 miles, now have 58000 and its used for auto-x and daily four season driver. The car is still stock so I can't comment on the boost part of your question.

Welcome to the forum and nice Lotus!

I know the the SVT engine is a pretty strong engine. It can handle a good amount of boost. I would say that the SVT engine in stock form can handle up to 300 whp pretty safely There is plenty of SVT owners with that amount of power on here.

First off to the forum.

I have had my focus since the beginning of it's existence to the road ... bought mine brand new with 2 miles on the clock at the end of 2003. I still have it now and have driven my SVT from Califonia to Texas to Wisconsin to Mississippi and back to Texas. Living in Texas takes a good beating when it comes to mileage ... with all that traveling I have accumulated 142,000 miles ... and still running strong.

With good maintenance any car can really ride nice. As for SVT Problems, I did have to change my clutch around 125,000 miles. That would be the biggest thing that has happened. The usual stuff, shifter cables loose once and funky cold starts here and there (fixed with a tune).

I am 27 and have driven my car as a daily for school and now track the car in AutoX monthly. Still good to go.

As for Forced Induced SVTs, I have met a few people who have boosted SVTs for longer than a year or 2 and they still have no issues (knock on wood for them). I have heard that the Jackson supercharger is the safest to go with and a major turbo pushing you over 325+ is getting close to it's limits. But there is someone on here who had a 350+ SVT Turbo and ran well for a year.

So the internals of the SVT are very strong and can with stand a good beating here and there.

Hope I answered your question in a broad aspect. Someone will probably chime in with some more of a detailed answer.

Again ... to the site

Bought my '02 in '05 with 12,453 miles from a gentleman in his 50's. I was 18 then, 22 now... interestingly, he babied her in terms of maintenance (two car covers, garaged, weekend fun car) but drove the hell out of her. At 12,453 miles he was on the second clutch and that one went not too long after I got it. I haven't really had the funds as a student to keep her immaculate, but I get my fluid changes on time and try to keep anything too disastrous from happening. While I'm not a scratch-fearing maintenance fiend, I tend to baby her by comparison in the driving realm.
I'm unboosted, but have put a fair bit of upkeep money into my baby. Mine has largely been for things like suspension/wheels/tires/clutch (thanks 1st owner) rather than engine issues. I suspect my driving trends a reflected in this - she's been driven between Santa Barbara, CA and Anchorage, AK 6 times for a total of 23,000 miles on less-than-ideal roads some of the time. Other driving around both hometowns and with random road trips thrown in, I've brought her up to 81,000 miles in these last 3 years or so (22,000+ per year). We've been through a lot together, and now I'm in the process of readying her for the next 80,000 miles :-D

I am 30 and my SVTF was my first new car. It has 68500 on the odo. Aside from the common clutch issue I have to say that my car has been very reliable. I do all routine maintenance right on my own driveway and that's all it really needs - in addition to the fill-ups of course. I do engage in some spirited driving once in a while and that's when the car really shows its greatest quality - BALANCE. And one more thing - Is there a better looking hatchback out there?
Sorry, can't comment on forced induction.

My wife picked up my 03 October of 2008 with 107,000 miles on the clock and 60,000 on the engine as a college graduation gift. The previous owner stated to me that during a routine dealer oil change, the oil was drained, filter replaced and engine started w/o oil added. A new engine was ordered shortly after. No major mechanical issues have occured in my 5 months of ownership. I did replace an O2 sensor and have detailed the paint extensively. I am the 2nd owner of this vehicle and it is predominantly my daily driver, roughly a 20 minute commute to work and home. I am 25 and have been married for 5 years.
