Newbie Questions

Due to the economy I find myself scaling back into something less expensive but somewhat fun to drive. It appears the SVT might fit the bill as a fun daily driver.

Okay owners what model year appears to have the quirks and issues worked out of it or are all model years just about the same?

Is the clutch or tranny fragile and on average how long does the clutch last?

How is the engine life and reliablity?

What is the engine 1/2 life?
My definition of 1/2 life in an engine is when there is substancial degradation in lack power and pep in but still functions okay to get from point A to point B.

What is the item that fails at the most inopportune time as in it could be minor but is really irritating or a repetitive problem?

What are the known or common issues that many owners face and at what mileage or time intervals for replacement or repairs of these common issues?

Anything specific I should check or be aware of during the SVT buying process?

Thanks guys

I had a 04 with a clutch that I replaced at 75k, I noticed it slipping as early as 35k. All SVTs came with a pre-TSB clutch. Some people are just lucky I guess. Just remember that the SVT required 91 octane but I ran 89 a few times with no problems. I never did run 87 nor would I want to. The transmissions is solid and strong.

Other problems are the DSI clip and master cylinders leaking. Only thing I haven't had yet is the DSI issue knock on wood. I think you can buy one with 100k on it but make sure the timing belt was changed and along with the clutch/flywheel. Those are the only issues that I can think of. You will have your typical <$50 parts here and there like I replaced the TPS sensor.

I heard 02's have had issues with the variable cam timing but it might just be a rumor. as much as I love my SVT focus it sucks to go from a lotus to one!

Thanks for all the welcomes and well wishes from board members.

It's not going to suck that much, I have had 4 of them in the past and I will probably get an V8 Evora in the future as the economy improves and I resume to make what I am used to. Although I don't plan on going heads up against an F335, Diablo, or sport bike with an SVT. Even though the SVT has a speedo that says 160 I'm not sure I have the rock solid confidence trying to go mid hundered in an SVT.

A see a lot of people do autocross and it has been years since I did that. It was fun and enjoyed it when I used participate but a lot more violent than a road course that I have been more used in my later years.

From some of the posts I have been reading it appears that for certain SVT's it is almost as maintainence intensive as an Esprit although the parts costs appear less expensive. I don't mind occasionally dropping the drive train or suspension bits out of the car unless it gets to be numerous to the point of irritation. This is not to say I'm not willing to pay the price for fun or robust driving only that it be kept with perspective.
