Say it aint' so..

So, the trans. is out on the car. Re-cap: 02 svt. 32k on odometer. At the shop and they say it is because the clutch was so fried that it caused damage to the trans. They claim that the clutch had a T.S.B on the fly wheel and that i should have had notice of the T.S.B.
In short, needs new clutch, and trans. When i said rebuild the MTX75, and update the flywheel and clutch he said no can do. They claim that the MTX75 is a disposable trans. Why did i not know this? Does anyone else know this?
He claims there is NO parts avail. for this trans, and that i can not put a MT285 in there. This is six speed btw. I forgot to mention that.
Ford wants $5500. for a new MTX75, available only from Detroit. The car isnt worth that much. Well maybe, it is brand new from the first year release of the SVT with way low miles. All soft too
So, do i go buy another used MTX75 for $1000. or which cant be fixed in the future should such a thing ever happen again, or do i push forward with trying to find a replacement transmission that can be worked on?
Would love to get some feed back on this, has anyone else encountered this? The wife says call ford, that the car is in too good of condition to have this bad of a problem. I tried to explain that i did not buy the life time warenty that Ford did not offer..

Shit.
I wanted to spend $2500. on a turbo, not a trans. What do i do? Do you think insurance would total it out? The damage is more than the car.. Just a thought. Then i could buy it back from them for cheap!

first, unless I'm missing something, the SVT's dont have the MTX75 they have the Getrag 6-speed. Only the standard zetec focus have the MTX75. I'd start there and make sure they know what they are looking at. I have also heard that the Getrag is bulletproof but there can be issues getting parts to fix them if the transmission truely is messed up.

IDK about your insurance but mine doesnt cover maintanence issues like this, but you can check in to it if thats the route you want to go.

What is this shop? I wouldn't trust them if they are saying you need a new transmission. You should get a second opinion on that. Sounds like they are trying to get some money out of you.

It is true that there are no parts to rebuild the MT285. What is exactly wrong with it? You can swap the MTX75 onto the SVT which what some people do do get better drag times because our 1st and 2nd gear are too tall. If you want to go that route(if your tranny is really effed up anyways) You can find them used for <$500. I've seen the SVT trannys for under $1000 too. You just have to look around.

Your wife is right, you should also call Ford to see what they say. Even though you are off warranty, your car barely has any miles and that Pre-TSB clutch/flywheel got destroyed.

What exactly is damaged in the transmission that was caused by a fried clutch? They are correct on the price from Ford, that's what they quoted me. The reason they are dispossible is because they are a Getrag trans and instead of fixing, Ford just replaces them. I wonder if you can get parts directly from Getrag? Anyone tried this? Anyways, you can buy a used transmission and a stronger aftermarket clutch for around $1500-2000 for a low mileage one. I got one with 9K miles for $1000.

um ive never heard of a clutch being gone = ruined transmission. didnt this same thing happen to someone else on here where they went to an acutal ford dealer and they tried to tell them that when they replace the clutch the recommend that they replace the transmission too? wtf is up with that?! thats a complete lie and all they want is your money. the MTX75 is the regular 5 speed that all the normal focuses have and the Getrag 6 speed is what the SVT's have. Your transmission is fine. Get that car towed somewhere else if you cant do the clutch install yourself and have them put in a new clutch and pray that they shop its at now didnt mess with your trans to "make it broken"

I moved this to the owners lounge since it's not really performance related.

I somehow doubt much of anything is wrong with the trans.
Take it to someone that knows how to apply themselves and get the upgraded post-TSB clutch. I went through 2 clutches prior to the post-TSB clutch, and have now put about 60k on the psot TSB clutch with no signs of weakness at all.

If you do have a clutch that is not fully disengaging or engaging, you can grind the hell out of the gears, or toast the syncros. If thats the case, the trans might be on its last leg. But if the clutch just crapped its pancakes, the trans should be just fine.

Maybe someone else has some education on this, but are afterfactory clutches built off the post-TSB clutch or the factory specs? I believe the post clutch is slightly bigger, like 9 inch compared to factory 8 inch? Tossing around the idea of getting a Kevlar disc, stock pressure plate, and aluminum flywheel to see if everything will mate.
