I'd like to know as well. Nobody has given a consistent answer as to what fluid is supposed to be in the SVT tranny. What weight is the original motorcraft tranny fluid?

Fluid type

i have a '02 focus se manual transaxle...time has come for it to be changed but i cant remember the type of fluid. if this helps; it has the 2.0L Zetec-E engine i think it takes synthetic manual transaxle fluid but is it any specific oil viscosity or is it just "Synthetic manual transaxle lubricant"?

Well I'm a newb here but thought I should offer some wisdom gained from performing maintenance on my other vehicles:

When changing fluid in a differential/tranny/transfer case that has both a drain and fill plug, ALWAYS remove the FILL plug first. That way, if your drain plug cannot be removed for any number of reasons, you are not stuck with an undrivable vehicle. As a bonus, removing the fill plug first helps to drain the fluid a bit faster.

superunkn0wn: Good point. You never know if some douche bag at Jiffy Lube used an impact gun to tighten down the fill plug.

I've never heard or read anything negative about using the RP synthetic. Having just drained and filled with it about three weeks ago, it seems to perform well. I don't think it's a life-altering experience, as some would lead you to believe. But the shift action seems to be at least as smooth as it was with the original fluid in the gearbox.

I just ordered the Amsoil synthetic manual transmission & transaxle fluid. It's supposed to be very close to the Ford fluid in terms of lubricant properties, since Amsoil bases their recommendation on the ASTM specs for the tranny. I'm no Amsoil fanboy but their science is sound for the most part.

Definitelly avoid any GL-5 gear oil as the synchros are compatible with GL-4 only.

The Mercon V has been recommended by SVT according to some here. It seems that would be sound advice as well, and certainly one of the least expensive options.

I just used this to guide me through changing my gearbox oil too. Pics were a great help.
I went with the Royal Purple Synchromax - I called Royal Purple and that's what they recommended for the SVT.

I noticed that my shifts are smoother - I'm talking instantly different. Was notchy in between gears at times, now much smoother.

I used our air powered oil suction pump to remove my old oil since the drain plug wouldn't budge.

Hello SVT owners. Working on my daughters boyfriends 2003 Focus SVT and just completed replacing the clutch with the updated DMF PP and disc. Checked here to get info on fluid replacement and see one post on a counterweight delete. I am curious about that. Can someone please post additional information on that procedure? Are they referring to the big weight on the shift linkage? Thanks,
Alan
