Stock Exhaust Question...

I'm fairly new to the SVT life, so I don't know too much about them yet. When I bought my 2002 SVTF from a dealership, apparently the person who owned it before me swapped the stock airbox with a cone filter, which I'm still trying to get rid of the CEL for, and supposedly had a magnaflow muffler. However, the dealership removed the muffler and put it back to stock. I asked my buddy who owned a SVTF as well and he said they put a stock zx3 setup on it. When I rev it up past 3k and let off, it does a lot more than the normal pop. IT RATTLES! Loud as hell, to the point that it sounds like its falling apart. (Very embarrassing at red lights lol). I checked most of the brackets and heatshields and that doesnt seem to be the problem. It sounds like its coming from what I would believe to be the muffler? Not the furthest box at the end, the one before it. Internally. My question is would this be because of the possibility of the zx3 box, or maybe they just put a shitty one on, that is blown out inside?

Exhaust opion- just stright pipe it now, cat back.  If your gonna get a OEM SVT muffler, your evently gonna wanna go "lunch box delete" or just get a whole new cat back system. Do what you want.

get a borla...best 400 bucks you'll spend (contact Mike b16sir1991 on the boards here) but they coulda just messed up on the install somehow. Measure the diameter of the pipe...a stock SVT should be 2.25 I think.

A dealership sold u a car with a CEL on as well as a rattling exhaust muffler? Thats a tad weird if you ask me.

Buy yourself a quality catback. It will maybe help a little with power. It will sound better, and should not rattle. I know a lot of people like the factory exhaust, but I personally like the aftermarket better. There are lots of kits to choose from choose what you like best. As far as your cel, I have never heard of exhaust causing that before. Maybe an 02 sensor or something. Good luck.

Here's what stock zx5 exhaust sounds like with a long tube header and no cat (lots of rattles):

It is probably the cat mounting bracket.

OMG....ok I'd really like to know what that rattle is because mine is doing it as well. I thought it was the upper half of the heatshield on the cat (I dunno what happened to the bottom 1/2) that was just sitting there loose. I had it taken off today and the rattle is still there. My system is completely stock w/ the lunchbox cut out, straight piped to a tip instead. It only rattles around 1800rpm when reving up, and rattles from 2000rpm through 1800 on the way down. THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY! Anyone with similar problems please post.

^^^Your problem is the CAT mounting bracket, not the heatshield.
Your rpm where it rattles is right on the money for that problem.
