Stained Backsplash

When I bought my car the fiberboard backsplash on the firewall was stained and filthy. Looking through the gallery I noticed a lot of cars with the same stain. Originally I thought a radiator hose may have let go in it's previous life but now I think it's something less disastrous. Can someone tell me what causes it? I plan on showing the car and would like to minimize the engine bay cleaning.

Engine bay mod everyone should do!

Here's my thread I made a few months ago.
You can actually remove it with no ill effects. Looks 100x better.

I checked your thread. It looks fairly simple but did you have to move the fuse box?

you do not need to remove the fuse box, and if you do, its not hard to swing outta the way.
