Help!

I'm having a problem with my SVT. I dropped a friend off just a little while ago and was on my way back when something bad happened to my car.

I pulled out onto a backstreet and gently pulled away from a T-stop where the car felt like it lost 80% of it's power. I figured my DSI clip might have broken so I took it onto the highway.

I cranked it upto about 5500RPM and it pulled strong at about 4800 or so. Now I was convinced it was the DSI in short runner mode. The cool-flo also HOWLED at all ranges (idle-5500RPM) when I punched it which also made me think it is in short runner mode because it's always loud when it goes into a short runner.

Well I got home and checked the DSI and it appears to be closing the intake properly and everything. I found this out, only after burning my hand on the damn cooling line reaching back there!

Anyway I hooked my xCal2 up to read the DTCs and I got a few...

P1000- I reloaded Tom's tune on it recently so that's OK.
BUT THESE ARE BAD:
P1681 - Oil Metering Pump
P1383 - VCT Retarded

Now I am hoping that the P1681 is that silly little VCT servo that likes to leak by it's O-Ring and not the PHYSICAL OIL PUMP on the car. The oil idiot light did not come on. I checked the oil earlier today and it is a bit dirty (was planning on getting it changed this week) but it's still full. Someone please tell me good news......

Correction! Oh thank-god!

I re-read the DTCs and this came up. I was scribbling these codes down on a shred of paper and I must have written one of them down wrong....

B1681 - PATS Tranciever Signal
P1383 - VCT Retarded

Is it possible that my dirty oil just confused the VCT temporarily? I tried clearing them just a second ago and they did not come back. I revved it a few times (undoubtedly pissing off my old neighbors lol) and the throttle response was right there and it sounded good with the usual rumble/pop when I let off. Before it was stumbling a bit and revved about as fast as my old 1940s iron Briggs and Stratton.

Any thoughts? I am beginning to think that Tom was right when he said the VCT should be canned even if it effects the bottom end torque a little bit... Anyone know how much the eliminator kits go for?

$100 for the VCT eliminator, I think. Unless you're going FI, I wouldn't toss the VCT... maybe it just needs a new sensor? According to SVT, the VCT and DSI account for about 20 ft. lbs. of torque at 2500rpm. I don't know how much the VCT plays into that, but that's quite a bit to lose.

Thanks guys and gals. I took her out this morning and ran it up through the gears a bit. It feels as strong as it's ever been. Maybe it was just a fluke?

The irony hear is that I remember I got into an arguement with Tom about eliminating the VCT and I thought it would be bad because of the drop in torque. With the bad gearing, the SVT really needs all the torque it can get down low too. Tom said that the VCT was nothing but trouble though. I'm thinking he was right...

Technology is only trouble for those who don't want to figure it out. The symptoms and engine code are consistent with the VCT sensor going bad, though. You may want to have a new one ordered and on hand just in case things go south.

Not always. I am fully aware of how it works and how-to figure it out. The stuff I work on at work makes the SVT look like it is in the stone ages anyway :P . I just don't want any problems. I get really nervous when my wings are clipped so if this turns out to be a chronic failure on SVTs then I might just eliminate it. I plan on going FI soon so the torque defecit would be short lived.

Already have an inquiry with Dan about getting one. I'll probably keep it in the hatch with the rest of the spare parts that I keep back there in case my car leaves me stranded.

Thanks again for the help and suggestions everyone. Greatly Appreciated.

Btw, anyone know why my PATS was freaking out? It was saying that the transciever signal was weak or something.

Try using a Different Key, Just to rule out the Transciever in the key.
