UDP's

I tried the all mighty search function and couldnt find anything, so I'm asking.

I read before that aftermarket under drive pulleys shorten the life span of your engine. Is this true? And why exactly do they shorten it?
Basically, I'm running out of options of stuff for my engine without going F/I. So would they be worth it for the whopping 5hp they claim to add? Or do you think they would be a good addition to the modifications I already have?

Oh and would UDP's be recommended with F/I (if I went that route).

I dont know about your engine but it could ruin the life of your alternator...or is that a overdrive pulley??? i never got into these things..but herd they can give a few extra hp.

If your water pump isn't pumping enough water to cool the engine properly, I suppose that could be hard on your engine.

Well that doesn't happen with the UDPs. They say that by taking off the factory crank pulley, you're making the motor "unbalanced" because the harmonic balancer is built into the crank pulley. I don't think its true, but alot of people won't go near UDPs...isn't that right Tom?

The effect is supposedly a long term one, meaning that it just takes a toll on the motor, but I have them on my SVT for 20k miles and never looked back.

I think 5 hp is bs. Realisticly, about 2-3 at the wheels per Focus Fanatics magazine dyno.

They won't work with the JRSC, and I'm not sure about the other blowers. They don't affect the alternator either. Either way, you do notice a difference after you put them on. I say go for it.

Since the crank UDP doesn't have a balancer, do you notice any vibration?

I have crank UDP and water pump ODP....so I'm still using stock belt, water pump is at the same rpm...difference ? hard to tell as I did more stuff, but no vibrations and A/C is taking less hp when it's on ;-)

With a UDP you can balance them like a tire (not with weights but with small amounts of shaving from the inner ring) but I really don't think most people have the equipment to do this. Harmonic Balancer on our cars is a peice of rubber, now would it make any difference if you had a CNC'ed UDP that is completely balanced or do they come balanced already.
