Exclamation Which Performance Axle ?

There are a lot of posts concerning the replacement of the stock clutch/flywheel combination with lightweight flywheels and various beefier clutch pressure plates.

Common stuff...and NEEDED in my opinion.

That said, with so much extra torque and grip, I was told by my repair shop that there is a real possibility that I could break the drive axles. This is especially true if the car is ever mated to slicks or DOT legal competition tires for autocross or drag racing.

I autocross and do big track events with this car. I certainly don't want to be halfway through a high speed corner and lose a half shaft.

Has anyone else heard of this? Does anyone have any recommendations for stronger/upgraded drive axles?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

A long time ago i came across uprated ones for the SVT, but I have no idea who made them.
Something like $700 each.
But Ford rate the SVTs shafts up to 200nm torque.

Thanks Man. $700 each is a little steep I imagine I could snap a lot of stock axles before I needed to think about dropping that kind of bank.

Still would be interested if anyone else knows something...

Enjo axle shafts are a pair for like 1500 bucks, but they are supposed to hold around 500 hp or somehting like that.

The SVT axles are already a lot larger than the standard models.
I could be wrong, but I don't believe I've heard of anyone breaking an axle, even with FI.
That is, not by overpowering, but maybe by abuse or an accident.

EDIT:
Well, there ya go WeeAsp.
I wouldn't have responded if I had seen Tom's reply, but I was still typing.

I recall a website that manufacturers performance axles having a slot for the Focus and instead of a product, there was a description saying "when you start breaking them we'll start making them." Apparently the drive axles are the only part Ford overengineered on the Focus.

i have done 1 burnout since i puchased my SVTF back in 08/04. during that one burnout, i screwed something up. when i went to turn right, it felt like it didnt want to turn, and the oh-so familiar halfshaft clunking was there. but with my experience with this issue on other cars, i kept driving. after a couple miles this symptom went away. what else besides halfshafts could have produced this issue?

Thanks guys !!

Based on your feedback, I'll hold off on seelling a small child to afford the axles.

I really appreciate it.

As for the last post. I sounds to me like you had a CV joint bind. Happens sometimes and sometimes you get lucky and they sort themselves out. If it ain't broke....don't fix it.

As an FYI, I'll be starting another thread about performance driving events for 2007. Specifically, on the East Coast. I work a lot with SVTOA and they put on a decent event.

Thanks again guys!
