New to the SVTF but not SVT

Ok, so I currently have a 99 Silver Frost CSVT with just under 90k on it. Im becoming a little bit weary in regards to its reliability simply because I have to be at the hospital when im supposed to be there, without exception ie, I can't afford a breakdown.

With that said, I have found a certain car, it is 1 of 74 ever built. Correct, that would make it a 2004 Sonic Blue w/ Euro package. Car has 30k on it and the selling price is 12,900. Im feeling like this is going to be a trade I go through with.

Ive read ALOT about busted ass trannys and that has me somewhat concerned. This particular car is under factory warranty until 5/27 of this year. Im considering a third party extended warranty. What are your thoughts?

As anyone driven both a CSVT and a FSVT and would care to compare? I really don't want to let go of that sweet V6 sound after coming from this car, and a supercharged VR6 before it.

In the name of reliability, is this a good move?

A supercharged VR? Dear lord I would mess myself everytime I hit WOT. I had a VR 94 passat awhile back. On the subject of the cars. I personally have just had my trans replaced. Ring and pinion blew up taking other vital parts with it. Other than that (which is not a common thing, even though it's happened to a few) is the only real problem with the car with the exception of basic maintence and upkeep. That price for the car sounds pretty fair to. I'm also worrying about my car as I have 88K miles and am worried things might start letting go (well, other than the trans already). As much as I'd hate to get rid of it, it might be in the not so distant future.

Yup, VF engineering stage 2 Vortech VQ-9 = 280 crank horsies in a black on black lowered on coilovers GTi.

Columbus eh? I lived there for the past 7 years, two degrees from OSU and used to work for Battelle.

I actually totalled the GTi @ the Continent in 2004 :(

I say, GO FOR IT!!!! The '04s cured a lot of issues. I've had mine for a little over a year and a half, and I'm rough on her (though I maintain her well), and she's running like a champ. ::knock on wood:: I just replaced the clutch, but that was after over 62.5k on it.

Well I don't think breaking down will be a big issue, it will be more small naggy things that make you take it to the shop. I love my car and it runs like a champ, but it has had a couple of small bothersome things recently. I dunno if its just the cooler weather or what. It is really a luck of the draw when it comes to the SVT. It could run perfect for its whole life or it could be a piece of crap. It just depends on the SVT. Personally, I would say you'd be better off buying something that is more reliable than sporty. I hate to say it but can't go wrong with a low mileage Honda.

I had an '00 Tropic Green SVTC for about 40K and only had a few minor problems (bad strut; fuel pump died; the infamous melting dash and honking intake)... and only the fuel pump was a serious reliabilty thing while driving. And I've heard the water pump is a major concern, but I never had an issue...

As for the SVTF ('04)... I've had the cat replaced (no big deal) and the entire master cylinder replaced for the clutch pedal leak (more of a concern) -- and it's just over 30K.

The '04 SVTF's seem to be the most reliable, but buying one these cars is always a matter of blind faith! haha I've seen a lot of SVTC's and SVTF's with entire engines replaced, so it's anybody guess with reliability ...though the Sonic Blue with EAP is one of the more desireable combos (I'm jealous! that's the color I wanted...).

...and yes, you WILL miss the Contour and its beautiful engine and exhaust notes... oh, and torque! haha

The water pump is an issue mainly because Ford used some kind of craptastic plastic for the impeller, which self-implodes right around 60k. I got my CSVT with 59k on it an all records, it had oil changes every 3k, literally, on the dot.

The ONLY problems I have had were that I had to replace all four O2 sensors because a squirrel thought they would be fun to chew on (only one went bad, but the other three had evidence as such). And the other failure was the alternator. Other than that, no problems.

Funny that you mention the honking issue, its never happened to me.

Well, it sounds like you're ahead of the game with your Contour! The honking or "moosing" air intake was more of an embarrassment than anything... and Ford had a TSB for it.

The SVT Focus and Contour are some of the best rides from Ford in recent times, but both are marred with reliabilty issues... and since SVT is relatively inactive these days, it's hard to say when Ford will make cars like these again... if ever.

The features list of the EAP SVTF blows the Contour out of the water, but the Focus has a lot more quirks than the Contour did. The performance is about the same; fuel mileage can be a little worse with the SVTF (4 cylinder = fuel economy, right? - wrong)... this would be a tough decision for me, but the rarity of the Blue EAP would probably get the better of me.

Good Luck!
