Adjusting Shift cables???!

Hey guys... some of you may or may not know but i race a 03 focus Paved circle track. We swapped in a 03 svtf motor in the car. Ever since the swap (took all shift cables and shifter with swap) the shift cables have been off. Now when i shift hard from 1-2 or 2-3 it pops off the cable which is no good seeing it leaves the car in neutral in the middle of the race track w/o being able to fix it........ We tried to put new cables on the car but it keeps doing the same thing.... Any suggestions?

I believe it's a common problem, but I have never had it, so I can't offer any help.

I had an 90 integra once, and it slways did that. I took it to a muffler shop, and had them put a lil tack weld(or you can use jb weld) were the cable met the arm thing. Its not a very good fix, cause if the cable snaps, the you have to crack, pull, yank, cut the old weld off then, weld a new one in place. It worked on my car though. Think of it as redneck ingunuity. Or just being young and dumb

I had the same thing happen to my car at one time... nailed 3rd... pop.

Took the tranny out, put it back in, popped before I got around the block.

My problem wasnt the cable comeing off the shafted ball, it was the retainer that screws together that kept popping off its mount. I didnt have to adjust the new cables when I put them in (and I really shouldnt have put the new cables in, it wasnt needed) and havent had it happen since the lastime I fixed it. I just tighted up the plastic cable mounts as tight as I could, so they dont pop off anymore.

I say poke around on some import boards and see exactly how these type of cables should be adjusted. I know how to adjust stops on rwd manuals, this type might be the same idea... get the trans in gear, adjust your cables so there is no slack to overshoot the gear per say. *shrug*

GL man.

They make a special tool, but since you dont have one, you will need someone to hold the shifter completely still in the neutral postion. Then, release the ends at the shift tower. Place the trans in neutral and adjust the ends to match while your friend is holding the shifter.
