SVTF initial impressions

Just thought I'd post a mini-review on my new car. Before I settled on the SVT, I drove a GTI VR6, a GTI 1.8T, an Audi A4, an Audi TT 225 Quattro, an Acura RSX Type-S, a Mustang Cobra, and a Mitsu Eclipse GTS. Subjectively, the SVT feels slower than all but the 2002 A4 and the Mitsu I drove in a straight line, I think the actual numbers are pretty close for the SVT/TT/Eclipse, with the others being a bit better acceleration-wise. My favorite powertrain was the 24v VR6 VW, very torquey and smooth, with a sweet snarl at higher RPMs. This is followed closely by the SVT. It definately does not have the torque of the boosted fours or the v-6 models, but dosen't feel appreciably less torquey than the RSX. The SVT sounds awfully good though, aided I'm sure by the short-ram it came with. The RSX sounds meaner on the VTEC, and really takes off, but isn't as smooth (at least not the model I drove). The VW 1.8 I drove was heavily modified, and had awful turbo lag. It sounded like crap, went like crazy, but wasn't polished enough to be a daily driver. The Eclipse sounded ok, was smooth but didn't pull hard enough for all the gas it would be using. The Cobra was a '99 model that had a supercharger. It was insanely powerful and pretty fun, but the miles and age kept me away. Handling wise, the SVTF was my favorite hands down, followed closely by the RSX and then the TT. The others weren't even close, the VDubs were too soft, as was the Eclipse, and the Cobra was showing its age. Styling...well I preferred the TT inside and out, followed by the RSX, then the Focus. The others I wasn't in love with. Price wise, a big part of my decision to buy the SVTF is it was the 2nd cheapest besides the ancient Cobra. When all these factors combined, it was easy to see the SVTF would be the best choice for me. Sure it has a couple of annoying habits (like the highway 2500-3000 rpm surge) and ergo glitches (weird cupholders that dont really hold a coffee cup too securely, no center console stowage), but it has great seats, and good cargo room. It's been a blast to drive so far, been careful not too shatter too many speed limits, but always enough power on tap (as long as the revs are up) to squirt into gaps in traffic or blast down an entrance ramp. The roadholding is nothing short of superb, its pretty unflappable in corners. So far my mileage has been decent after a few tankfuls I'll post more, but dosen't seem too much different than my 2.0l Probe. If ya read all this thanks, and if you're facing the same choices I was, hope it helps

nice comparison. I love the handling of my svt (esp after upgrading the sways) and never get enough of digging into turns. Hope you have a lot of good times with your new ride.

nice review for sure. If you have a chance, take your SVT on some backwoods type roads with sharp turns and quick switchbacks. THAT IS where your SVT will truly show it's colors. One thing is for certain...You won't find a better forum with cooler people than this one! Have fun and be safe man! Oh yah...and apparently a tune will really up the anty against those other vehicle's you test drove.

nice review. The svtf is not really a fast car, but the handleing dynamics, balance and feel of the car will put plenty of smiles on your face! plus its a great daily driver. bye the way a tune +a ported throttle body, and a rear engine mount, make a ton of differance in driveability and engine response.= more smiles

Take your car in and ask them to relash the ECU there is an April 06 Flash that kills all the issues with the surging and cold start.

Thanks for the advice Nick, I will do that for sure, I got to take my car on a 180 mile round trip to pick up some friends at their school and go out to the club tonight, and i had some fun attacking the highway onramps and the back roads near bridgewater state univ. (mass) One of my friends remarked as we went around a ramp signed for 20 @ 65..."wow this car really corners well" hehe so I was happy to get a compliment. Also on the ride home there was a Viper getting on the ramp behind me, I put a few carlengths on him and came on to the freeway at about 80, then he blew by me at about 110??? I think he had to put me in my place for cornering better.

It moves pretty well. I held a Porsche Carrera last night to half a car length until halfway through second gear when he pulled about a car and a half ahead. He could have bought 5 of my cars for his....and he didn't even "smoke" me!
