After sitting in an '11 6-speed Mustang and feeling the throw/resistance, I have decided I want to modify my factory shifter and knob setup.
Post up your modified short shifters and any useful information we might want to know about the cost, installation, and/or improvements in feel and functionality.
I'm interested to see also how you guys have modified your shifter boots to fit.
Let's make this thread about pictures and information.
Get a poly torque mount/dog bone or put poly bushings in the factory one. I like Energy Suspension bushings in the stock mount, cheaper and replaceable. This and the shifter will change the feel.
Someone sold homemade shifter base bushings on here to replace the soft rubber ones. Me being cheap, or ingenious, I used washers. Three at each corner under the base and I reused the stock gold washers on the topside.
I have the shorter than stock Steeda shifter and the shift boot finally looked normal IMO. It gets rid of the "tipi" look that came from the factory. Overall it shifts so much better than factory, not quite like a RWD trans with a STS directly on top, but still good.
People have removed the counter weight or added weights (washers) to it. I don't like the counter weight off, and I left well enough alone and didn't add weight to it.
Did that shift knob thread on to the stock shifter? I have that knob, and I'm getting my SVT this weekend, I'm hoping it won't take any modification to just thread it on.
I know mine isn't an SVT but maybe it'll give you some ideas. It's a Blox Racing 490 knob, Redline custom 1" shortened boot, and Steeda short shifter. Whatever you do I highly recommend the Redline boots. They make some very good quality leather and you can customize the crap out of them.
Its the RS center console ebay.co.UK or ebay.de they are pretty rare here in the states a while back someone was selling one here on the forum and i think volcome bought it.
The consoles are getting harder to find since the MK1 is starting to get beyond junkyard age around the world. Mine came out of a lowly 03 sedan and I found it by luck. Looks like a lot of the newer members have never seen these consoles, I was around to catch the tail end of the "Euro craze".... and Cayse was more active too. lol
P.S. Don't buy a 02-05 facelift "ST170" centre console from the UK, these are asymmetrical and wont fit right in a LHD car. The RS console fits either way.
Fast forward a few years and driving this car every day, it's still great.
