lol my first car was a 91 escort gt and i used to do that too. but till one day i wanted to spin my tires so i put it in nuetral and reved it up, dropped it into drive... well lets just say gears broke and my car wasn't able to go in reverse no more.

my friend has a 4 banger contour with an auto and does that 1st gear 2nd gear drive shifting all the time. i even told him that hurts the tranny but he still does it lol. at least 3 years worth of it...

i dont see how it affects it that bad..... if it wasnt good for it then why would they have 1 and 2 on the focus

plus wouldnt overdrive affect it also? your going from 4th to 5th and the back and forth?

overdrive i guess just keeps it in 3rd when driving on hilly roads to keep it from shifting so much so you can get better gas milage.
1st gear is for towing and 2nd is for snow, if i'm correct? to keep your tires from slipping and to get traction.

No, when your car shifts at its programmed spots the transmission does stuff to prepare for the shifts like engage/disengage clutches. All types of crazy stuff, I don't know much about autos but I know when you shift it manually your car is not prepared for it and eventually damage can be caused. Now those gears are there for towing and mountain driving, not racing.

I had the 4spd auto SPI and I did drive like that every now and then b/c i did not know. Guess what, my tranny started to slip (even with my SCT on it) and it would have taken a full rebuild to fix it.

Just don't do it, if you want improved shifting get the SCT and the lentech valve body. Anything else will more than likely kill the tranny.

I would get a chip in a heartbeat for my auto if I didnt have to put higher octane gas in it. Or is there an option of not having to put in better gas? I know that the chip advances the timing and whatnot so you would have to put better gas in so it doesn't knock. But I wonder if there is a way to get performance without having to put better gas in. And is hitting the overdrive button rough on the tranny at all?

You can get a flasher OR a chip tuned by someone for 87oct. When I had my auto I had one tune for 93 and one for 87 on my flasher in case gas got short, lucky for me during the hurricanes in my area I dropped down to 87 and was fine. You will still see a HP gain with 87 but more with 93 and also you will still be able to have the improved shifting on your car no matter which tune you use.

I would go with the flasher b/c of all the extra use you can get out of it. Also I would ONLY use a SCT.

Hitting O/D on and off is not really gonna hurt as long as you don't do it repeatedly, it realy does nothing but keep it from going in 4th gear. It would be fine to do it in the city but not on the highway.

does higher octane gas REALLY make a difference in our cars? I thought generally only higher end sportscars benefit from it?
