SPI = base model Focus engine, carried over from the days of the Escort.

Zetec = Newer, improved motor, with more power.

PZEV = Newest, most improved motor, with even more power.

As I have stated elsewhere each serves a purpose, as Ford has deemed fit.

I think what he may be asking, is...what does SPI (for example) MEAN?
Heck, I'm not even sure...
Does it stand for...split port? or...?

So...are there pros and cons to each of the types of engines?
Is there a reason I should be happy with my split port?
Don't get me wrong...I AM happy with the performance that I've got so far...but I don't really have much of a basis for comparison either! lol

SPI gets slightly better gas milage then zetec or pzev
spi = 27/36
zetec is 26/33
pzev = 25/33
(all numbers are for sedans and from http://www.fordvehicles.com/cars/focus/index.asp?bhcp=1)

Looks like the SPI has almost as much peak torque as the Zetec and at a lower RPM, making it theoretically having more "oomph" in around town stop and go driving, since you don't have to rev it as high to make max. torque.
