2003 Silver LX Sedan - 2.0 L 122 CID L4 SOHC - Performance Options?

Back Story:
I recently acquired a 2003 Silver LX Sedan
2.0 L 122 CID L4 SOHC

Can someone confirm it's an SPI engine? I'm 99% sure it is.

It's a garage kept, no body rust, fully stock LX body. 20,000 original miles and I'm bummed that it only has A/C for bells and whistles!
It sat for 3 years, too.

ALL Preventative Maintenance will be done first. Oil Change and other fluids, filters.

I had a 2002 ZX5 - 2.0L Zetec DOHC and it has a nice ride but body was rotting out.

Point of this thread:
It was recently inspected, but there are some issues with it that need to be addressed, and in doing so, I want to upgrade parts to something other than OEM.

After spending a few hours searching the forums, there are some Old posts on LX options for suspension, braking, engine performance.

  1. To get my feet wet and address my current issues, I want to start with the suspension and brakes.
  2. Body style, it's not super pretty with steel rims and hub caps. Looking for 16" aftermarket rims and tires that will give this car a newer look.
  3. Next, engine tuning options on a SPI. (going to be a daily driver, not race track), intake, throttle body, TURBO?, exhaust, ignition coil/wires/plugs

Lets start with the first one. Suspension.

I read threads about not being able to add a rear sway bar without a SE back end?

Thank you in advance!

I'd sell it & look for a zetec/dtech car. Yea you could do all that, but how long will it last? & you'll have to figure the cost vs performance.

I'm keeping it.
It's low miles on the engine, no rust, etc etc.
I'm looking for a nice riding, fuel efficient vehicle for daily driving.
So struts, shocks, air intake, exhaust, etc are all things that can help me enjoy this car a little more.

Ok great your doing suspension/ brakes. Yea you could use the svt setup= .05'' drop, for the rear sway bar, Steeda has kit, consists of U shaped brackets, bolts, washers. You'll need to get the end links (use poly ones). Spread the brackets as far apart as you can & then tack weld the brackets to the cradle. For brakes your on 10'', so you could use a svt or a easier to find '05 only spindle, then the svt rotors/calipers would bolt right on. For the rear, yea you could find a '05-'07 st rear setup, which would get you a 10'' setup or find the svt caliper brackets, which would allow the svt 11'' rotors to bolt on. I'd do the front & see what you think. Motor mods= at the most is a intake system & a flex back exhaust system & leave it, do the motor maintenance & thats it, no turbos.

I have an SPI, all aesthetic mods because the motor isn't all that good. It may not be fast but you can make it look good!

I bought mine in 2012 with 24,000 original miles. have had 60,000 trouble free miles so far with just a sway bar link go bad. Keep up on the maintenance and it will treat you just fine.

SPI is tops for MPG, performance section lists the common mods that were done here to them (not much really, though in Europe they even put twin cam heads on them).

All the body/handling etc. that fits others works fine on them so you CAN spruce it up a bit & get fun handling improvements.
