Bought a Focus Last Night. Engine Question

Ok.. Bought a cheap focus for my step daughter last night. Does not start so I got it cheap. Is very straight and pretty clean and everything seems to work on the car other than the engine. I am a pretty competent shade tree mechanic. Been wrenching on my own cars for 20 plus years so digging into or replacing the engine doesnt scare me. It cranked but sounded like it was cranking sluggish and when it did fire it sounded pretty bad and died agian. So my question is this. If I end up having to replace this engine, what years are compatible? What bolts right in and goes. Or what short blocks bolt in if It is just a thrown rod or something? I dont mind putting this head on another engine and all the toppings if I need to. Any info would be helpful. This Focus is a 2.0L SE automatic with the base single cam engine in it. Also is there anything else I should check on these such as regular problem areas?

If it is what i think it is, it is the SPI focus.

Is this the engine that is in there now? says 2.0L Split Port across the top?

They have been known to drop valve seat

Well this will give you an idea if you want to swap to the Zetec motor.

Zetec Swap Write Up

you can search for SPI or split port on the site and find lots more about the motor you have as well

Would rather just do a straight swap if I need to swap it. Its for a teenage girls first car and its a automatic anyway so no point in trying to make it faster. Just need it to go and go safely and reliably. What years had this exact motor?

You mean the zetec or the SPI? zetec was in every focus from 00-04. The SPI was standard in SE and LX models until 04 as well. Some good info here: The Ford Focus - General History and Information

Its the SPI motor, and I do know the general history. Looking more for someone that knows what cross references. Like did they change any sensors in certain years that make the swap more difficult? Do they all have the same flywheel bolt pattern? Is the Duratec 2.0L short block a direct swap for the SPI short block? Did the SPI engine come in another vehicle that would also swap into this car. I think I have seen them in escorts at the salvage yard before. I am looking for specific information. I understand I can search the site and get information on the engine I have. I want to know about the engines I dont have or may need to buy.
