spi ticking noise

I have a 2000 focus, spi, 75000 original miles. Its developed a ticking noise that seems to be coming from the timing belt/motor mount area. Did a compression test fearing the valve drop issue and the compressions all are the same, appx 140 all the way across. The car runs well with no issues. The noise is engine rpm related, faster or slower depending on engine speed. I removed the drive belt thinking I may have a pulley or tensioner issue and the noise remains. Anybody have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated..

The SPI has a pretty common ticking/knocking noise. A search will of the SPI forum will bring up a ton of info. IIRC correctly, because of the design of the engine, some do tick. Mine didn't before I sold it, but many do.

But do your own research. See if your tick is the same as the one described in the other threads, it could be a problem, but I would guess it is the standard SPI noise.

Thanks for the replies. My engine has never been quiet but this particular ticking noise just started thats why it concerns me. I think Ill pull the timing cover off and take a look in there. As far as I know the timing belt has never been changed so it may be a good time to do that.

You can run the valves hot and look for a loose one, simple matter to shorten the rocker stand a bit to tighten up to shut up or the lifter is dead. I used to shut up noisy lifters all the time at the shop doing that. Modern engines have no provision for taking up wear there any more. They'd rather you take the car in to dealer for service.

The spi is a finicky little engine. Keep us posted on your finds. I have 72k on mine and no problems yet. Mine is pretty quiet but then again the 2003 model year had some changes.

Ok guys. Heres what I found out about the ticking noise in my 2000 spi. I tore into it and removed the timing belt and tensioner. The tensioner was completely worn out. Very loose with lots of internal play. Replaced the timing belt and tensioner and the engine is nice and quiet again. Nice easy fix. So if you guys start to get a noisy engine, especially on the belt side thats a good place to start looking. I used a Gates belt and tensioner, good quality stuff so it should last a long time.
