Question Reverse gear

I have a 5 speed trans. Sometimes when I try to put it in reverse, it refuses to go all the way into gear. I found two solutions to this problem.

1: I put in neutral, release the clutch, step back in again, then I put it in reverse. This usually ends up with a sharp jamming sound. (Not good at all if you ask me)

2: I play with the gears. I go from first to second and then reverse. This process helps, but it doesn't work all the time.

Can someone let me know if I need to replace a part? I just hope that my tranny isn't going bad. That wouldn't be good news at all.

That has only happened to me once, about 4 months ago. Also not sure what it was, but i spent about 2 minutes trying to get it to go into reverse. Since then i have not had any troubles, so im not sure what it was.
Hope you get it resolved
Alan

No worries, thats just how its made. It does the same thing to me on my focus. and did the same thing to me on me escort. its just they way they are, so your tranny is fine. I talked to the dealership to and thats what they said.

Mine does it all the time nothing wrong with it though, all you have to do when you put it in reverse and it doesn't full lock just release the clutch a little and it'll pop right in gear.

Try this. While the car is in neutral, wiggle your shifter from left to right a few times then try putting it into reverse. A lot of cars do this and if you try wiggling the shifter before puting it in gear it should help.

Isn't that an indication of a further problem w/ the transmission, when it pops outta gear. I remember reading that when it pops outta gear there's a problem with a part...maybe someone could help out

Your gear shouldnt be jumping back out once it's engaged, you might want to get that chk if its that annoying.
