Broken Crankshaft

I have a 2001 SE that (to make a long story short) was left in my driveway with a broken engine. There have been 2 dropped seat episodes and I thought this was a 3rd. I pulled the engine and found the crankshaft in 2 pieces. Split at the counterweight at cylinder #4.

Dropped seat episodes that are bad enough to slam the piston stress/bend rods on occasion, and that certainly stresses the crank....

One guess...

Water ingestion? For another....

If the engine has experienced 2 dropped valve seats, I would point to that as the most likely culprit. That may have damaged the integrity of the crankshaft, which then broke with further wear?

but as sailor pointed out, that is not the only possibility.

Can't see the picture quite clearly enough, but at a second look it seems to have cracked previously then finally broke. (dark section vs. bright section at the break)

The odd possibility of water of water ingestion would be from driving through a deep puddle. Happens occasionally even with stock air intakes.

The double drop valve seat problem is still the best guess IMHO.

Luck gettin' it back together, rebuilt head with "staked" seats or a new replacement head this time...

Thanks Sailor.

After the last dropped seat episode I had the head reworked at a local shop but I didn't specifically talk to them or check into the seat size/type. I just gave the shop what came in the seal/gasket kit and they pressed them in without questions. This has me a little concerned that the seats aren't the best replacement and I am open to having a third episode.

Adding to this quagmire is the fact that I see a little damage on one of the piston heads like something foreign got into the piston. It could be me over-worrying about it or maybe the guy who fixed this last time didn't clean out the intake and EGR good enough ... or I could have a third seat episode in the making. Would you all fix the valve seats once and for all?

Also, any good tricks out there to make sure the little spring in the main seal stays where it is supposed to when the new crank goes back in? I hear they are a little tricky and the guy who did this last time messed up and i had a decent size lead at the rear seal.

He new crankshaft from Rockauto came in and I think it's not a match. Take a look at these pics. The end of the shafts are different and the part numbers are a little different (the old one has two additional letters at the front). Thoughts.

Just the key not in it ... Showing my newbie-ness. I talked the the vendors and confirmed the casting number. I couldn't find the clearance spec for the journals. Does anyone know what it is?
