Question Tach Question

Im a noob when it comes to most electrical components. i have an automatic spi, however i would like to get a tach to monitor performance upgrades. does it just plug in somewhere, or is it more hardware oriented?

if you remove your gauge bezel, then you should see the cable for the tach behind it. Ford for some reason doesnt like to spend the extra 10 cents to put a tach in every car, but they have the physical cable that connects to one right behind the guage cluster.

there is no cable for the tach on teh focus, it is electronicly controlled.

You can get any tach to work on the spi or zetec by hooking it up to the wire on pin#48 coming out of the ecu harness under the dash.

some ppl say that you need to get a tach driver to get the tach to work but everyone I know including myself has just bought a tach and then hooked it up to the pin #48 and it works flawlessly.

Bowersdaazian: please dont post something you have no idea about, you have a zx3 with a tach so you dont have to worry about this us SPIers do.

Yeah sorry for the misinformation. I had no clue that the focus used electronicly controlled tachs and what not (i was under the impression that it was the same as a friends ford).

nope its not, but what is weird is you can do a gauge cluster swap, you can put in a zx3 gauge cluster w/tach in a non-tach foci and it will work as its driven by the same wire harness. the only thing that sucks is that the milage is stored on a flashed chip on the gauge cluster itself, if you can find a gauge cluster that matches your milaged you can do that swap instead.

on the ECU wire harness itself it is numbered, Find the one that is numbered as close to 48 as possible, then count back towards the center, that will show you were Pin #48 is.

the ECU is loacted in the glove box compartment, you need to take the glove box out and behind there will be the ECU and connected to the ECU will be the wireing harness.
