questions

ont hat 158whp spi
1-what cam gears are recomended? and it says (-3) is that what is recomended. what determines this.
2-efp valvetrain(what?)
3-custom oversize valves(what?)
4-cylander head decked for 11:1 CR(what?)
5-triple angle valve job(what?)
6-valves bored out 1.2mm(what?)
7-port and polish mai and head(i understand this)
8-retimed imrc(what?)
9-custom ecu flash; time advance for 91, egr off, alt off at WOT, fuel table rewriten.(is this a chip?)
10-prototype DSIM removed for now(what?)
11-orp(what)
12-quaife gears; zetec gears with 4.06 final drive. (what?)

i have heard waterboy say that the best thing to do is a port and polish and new cam, better than all bolt ons combined! where is that up there? 7 is the port where is the cam? i assume waterboy ment shaft not gears right?

anywho, i am totally lost on all of this. i am starting with bolt-ons and then perhaps a lil more engine work. what ever will not hurt the everyday drivability of the car. recomendations on the next moves are welcome as well as explinations of the above. post any and all info to the above #'s. i would love 158 whp!

now, i dont know everything about his setup, but here is what i do understand...

1) how you tune your cam varies depending on what you want your car to do. Tune it one way for power in the higher RPMs, the other way for lower end power. i believe that tuning it lower gives the low end power, but i could be mistaken. check out www.escortfocus.com they have camshafts and gears there.

4) He set up his cylinder heads for an 11:1 compression ratio. our stock ratio is 9.35:1 (for referance, the SVT stock ratio is 10.3:1, i believe)

6) i believe that means his valves are now 1.2 mm larger.

8) the imrc was what the SWAB mod was supposed to open. He retimed it to open sooner (i assume) which means it opens at a lower RPM then the 3500 or so that it opens at stock.

9) basically, he reporgrammed his ECU. like a chip, but without the chip.

11) Off road pipe

12) hes talking about the gears in the transmission. he changed the gears, and the final drive ratio of the tranny.

the rest is over my head. perhaps waterboy can answer 2, 3, 5, 7, and 10...

if any of my answers didnt make any sense, let me know, and i will try to make them make sense. might be hard since i cant make my own thoughts make sense right now....

hope this helps a little.

1. Right now from what I know is the Black Diamond Racing adjustable cam is what most folks use, -3 (negative 3) refers to the adjustment of the cam gear

2. EFP (Escort Focus Performance) valve train, this reffers to the springs, this refers to the Cam shaft, lifters, Springs, Retainers, stem seals. All of what makes up the valve train.

3. not sure where the custom oversized valves came from but I am sure if you work with a well reputable machine shop they can find someone who makes them.

4. The decked head refers to machining of a few thousands of an inch of the hight of the head, this well lower the head making it closer to the pistions, make the combustion chamber smaller which increases the compression ratio

5. not sure what the tripple angle valve job is yet, as I am just getting into the details of a head job and I have just started working with a local shop to work on my engine.

6. I think this is refering to increasing the size of the valve openings to increase the flow of air/exuase in and out of the head

7. skipped

8. the IMRC is an ECU controld unit that opens and closes the butterly valves on the intake side of the head, these valves right now stay closed until roughly 3500 rpm, these valves are suppose to had lower end torque and increase milage, by re-timing them and opening them up sooner increases the high end

9. most ECU changes are done with a flashing unit such as the SCT chip, and right now the only chip for the SPI that really works is the SCT chip, this chip allows you to make several changes to the ECU, such as timing, fuel pressure, idle speed, and much much more, the chip is needed when going into the Forced Induction world beucase with the increased air from a turbo or super charger larger MAF and injectors is needed and to accomiated the larger MAF and injectors a cutome ECU burn is needed and that is where the SCT comes into play.

10. DSIM is a custom fuel management system that was used before a good chip came out like the SCT

11. ORP = Off Road Pipe, it replaces the CAT.

12. Quafie Limited Slip Differencial changes the drive from one wheel wonder to a posi traction beast, and the 4.06 final drive is a gear set that allows for better off the line take offs but it comprimised hwy driving, both are transmition changes and it is also a good idea to swap in a new clutch preferably a stage 2 or higher clutch.

hope this helps.

only problem with this is he says "quafie gears" not quafie LSD....

I think he is refering to the actual gears.

but i could be wrong...

i do have questions about how each effects the engine, now that i know what each is refering to. but before we go there, i mentioned above that my auto sedan is a daily driver. which if any of these is usable for a quicker street driven focus.
i have bdr tb, magnaflow cat back, and short-ram intake.(know for sure i am looking for escort header, and udp(25%)).

i think all the mods that TXFO has done would be alright on a street driven focus. (i think his is a street driven focus)

however, the Off Road Pipe is not legal if you have to worry about emissions. unfortunatly, there is really no other alternative to free up that part of the exhaust system. so, you either dont pass emissions, or you have a bottleneck in your exhaust, so to speak. some people keep their stock cat in the garage and just switch it out when they need to pass emissions.

i also think that #12 wouldnt help you. i think that is for an MTX. but there is still stuff you can do to help your ATX.

the rest of the mods should be fine on a daily driver, i believe. however, your ATX might not be too happy with you. depending on how much use (and/or abuse) you have put it through already , it might go on strike... but of course, there are ways to beef up the ATX too. it just depends on how much $ you want to spend. I think waterboy is looking into some parts from Lentech (or is it a whole tranny Jim?)

ya, money is tight. is there a right or wrong order? i will finsh the header and udp as soon as a header is located, and udp ordered. then i suppose the p&p and cam shaft that jim suggested. then from there, who knows.
my atx was abused by a 79 year old lady for the first 7k of its life. ha ha ha abused. h ha ah, i got the car in feb and she now has a lil over 12k. the exhaust, intake,tb have been on for prob 700-1000, and my eibacks and 17's for about 100. she is still a baby, a cute little twighlight blue baby.
