Tach Idea

Ok i had a thought...you cant really change out instrument clusters between cars(legally) with out resetting the odometer. well we know that the information for the odometer and your trip are held in the instrument cluster itself and not in the car, so when you try and change it out you get whatever miles that are in the instrument cluster itself. well i have a zx3 cluster w/tach laying around and i was thinking that maybe you could take it apart and just take off the odometer/trip piece and then take the other cluster apart and switch them. im not sure if that is where the information for it is held, but i took the cluster mostly apart and it looks like that odometer piece is a little box that pulls off. but i think to get to it you would have to remove the needles and the faces as well as the back plastic piece and the circuit board to get to it. i dont know if anyone else has tought of this or if anyone knows more about the electronics of the cluster than i do. but i just thought that it might be a way to get tachs in our cars without buying aftermarket ones. anyways....thoughts?

i have not heard of this tried, but i have not been in the SPI world forever.

I honestly do not know about the workings of the guage clusters to know if this will work or not. in theory, it sounds good. but there may be unforseen complications.

i think the best thing to do is find a tach with milage slightly higher then your own, and swap the guages when the match, or find a dealership willing to do the milage change for you.

it is definatly worth a try, if there is someone brave enough to be a guiney pig.
if you do it, keep us informed.

ok..im giving up on this battle. i cant win. i disassembled my zx3 cluster w/tach and i found out that the odometer piece where i hoped the information would be stored is hollow, and is soddered to the motherboard. there is no way to remove it. i give up. im just gonna buy a tach driver for the aftermarket one i have. oh well, it was i good idea though.

yea i've tried a few things and nothing really works. I am just going to wait until I hit 83k miles on my car and change our my gauge cluster then. I know thats what other ppl have done was just swap out the clusters when the milage matched.

all the info is held on the lil square chip about 1/2 inch in size. and it is welded on to the chip board when you take off the white plastic covering. unless you got something to take off welds.. your screwed on your idea partner.
