Today after work I pulled my head and intake. What I found made me sick, angry, and embarassed. What I found was that if you rotate the secondary butterflies as I have done and given instruction to do, you are making the butterflies rotate 180*. This means that your butterflies are fully closed all the time. not open as I had thought. While this lengthens your runners and makes torque (good), it starves the engine for air at WOT (BAD!!). Please change your setup ASAP. I apologize for this, as it was an honest mistake and no harm was intended. You should have no ill effects from this other than decreased gas mileage. I'm anticipating good results from this correction.

Jim

Man, your timing couldn't have been much better for me. I was gonna do the SWAB Sunday when I put my chip in.

I may be a bit dense, but is there a different way to get the same results doing something different on this mod? Like, well, uuummmmmm. OK I give up, I'll stick to computers. What I'm getting at is do you just need to do the SWAB mod a little differently or is it scrapped totally?

Thanks

Cory

if rotating the butterfly all the way like we are currently doing turns them 180*, wouldnt rotating them half as much rotate them about 90*?

Do you think there is a way around this Jim, or is it just not worth it?

Hate to find that out about the mod. I was kindof getting used to that little extra torque. Today when i was on the highway, it seemed as if it was slower to accelerate from 70 onwards. I planned on making a seperate post but read this before i had the chance too. Are there any long term effects by keeping this mod as i had it with the butterflies at 180 degrees? If so, what will be damaged? I feel as if i should know this, but i'd like to know for sure, what kind of damage can occur with WOT while starving the engine of air? I don't race my car, just sometimes drive aggressive.

I don't think so. Mine was set up that way for over two years. I race it, flog it, drag it, autocross it...whatever. So if it didn't blow up on me I think you're gonna be ok.

I wish this was a joke post, but this is what I found today and I'm ashamed of myself.....

I wouldn'y worry too much. Judging from all the help you've given me and other, I doubt that anyone could have much of a gripe.

After all, mods are done AT YOUR OWN RISK. And thats just about all i have to say about that.

Relax, everyone (even the Focus gods ) are allowed to make a few mistakes!!!

dont beat yourself up Jim.... You have given me more useful SPI knowledge then i could ever dream to learn alone.

One minor mistake will not hurt any of us.

but if you still want to beat yourself up, and want to somehow rectify the situation, you could always give me your t-bird. LOL

seriously.... one quick question... will opening the butterfly up only half way and holding it in that position give us the originaly desired effect?

I would think so. When you go for the full on port and polish with EscortFocus.com, they remove the butterflies alltogether when they port the head. I won't know until later today or even tomorrow as I still have to port my head. I'm considering using the plasma cutter to remove all the innards from the split port butterfly section. MMMMMM, plasma cutter.......
