Question please help very green newbie

Hi all, first thing first, i have done all possible searches on the following questions, to be quite honest i am very green as far as cars go and i did'nt understand much of the info i found.
I have 2002 lx spi 4 dr sedan with 14 in stock wheels i want to upgrade to 16 in wheels.

1) do I need to lower the car?
2) what is the largest tires i can install with saftey being a priority?
3) how will these changes affect driveability, gas mileage, and confort?

your input would be much appreciated: please be advice I am not familiar with the lingo so explain it in layman's term.

thanks

you never "need" to lower the car that just depends on what you want to do with your car

if your only wanting to upgrade to 16" wheels look on ebay they sell the stock 16" focus zts wheels all the time complete with tires for i think around $400 (try searching with "16" focus wheels and tires")

ive got 17" wheels on my car with 205/40 tires (205 mm wide, 40mm tall) and i still have about 21/2 - 3" of clearance over the tire so i plan on dropping my car 2"

Car does not need to be lowered.

Just keep in mind that you can install rims sizes from 14 to 18 inch but as the rim size gets bigger, you get less tire/rubber, which = harsh ride.

So, I would stick with 16 or 17 inch rims.

This link can also help you select the proper tire size.
Also, most online places already know which plus-size tires/rims will fit your car.
