I just took a quick look at this subject because I have thought about it for a long time. The Escape 4wd system seams like it would realy work. I will look at it some more and talk to my proffesor. He is a real big car guy too (and engineer). That might help

I too have thought about the Escape as a donor to build an awd Focus. Much fab work would be needed for the rear, but the trans from a zetec powered Escape should be a bolt-in.

Jborden, PM me with your professors thoughts on this.

When I first got my first Focus back in 02 I thoguht about AWD. I also had heard of the Escape idea. Here is few things I found that I can recall.

I used my dads Escape and my car ion a rack and we spent the better part of a weekend looking everything over. If I find what I had written down and researched I will post it up.

1) The AWD system only came with the Auto. It is FWD bias when not sensing slip.

2) AWD model was V6 only. Not like the V6 conversion has not been done already but back then it was still just talks.

3) Lots of custom made brackets. I think using the back end of a V8 conversion would help the RWD section.

4) Computer stuff would be intresting, I never found out if the Escapes ECU controls everything like the Focus or if it is sperate of the HAVC type stuff.

Anything is possible they use to say a V8 would never fit LOL

Me personaly if someone did it I would love to see how. $$$$ wise it is not going to be cheap but it would be cool. I would go with a RWD conversion and just keep my motor or use a turbo 2.3 (Old school 2.3 from a turbo coupe, SVO or Merkur)

awd Focus

I work for a Ford/Mazda dealer...wouldn't it be great for the next all new Focus to come to the US to be available in an awd version to compete with the Subaru WRX Sti/Mitsu Evo/next VW R32, etc. Heck, Mazda is selling a few awd transverse mounted turbo 4 cars/suvs right now in the US-is Ford listening???
