Question new - easy question hopefully

Hi all. This might seem idiotic, but go easy on me. Looking for a good city car, small, good MPGs, hatchback, and AUTOMATIC. Already have an 06 Miata 6 speed manual.

Would an 07 Focus ZX3 SES automatic be a good buy? Seems like they are about $14k out the door.

How are the automatics holding up in the Focus line? Sealed units like VW, or can the fluid be changed easily?

Honestly, this would be a car that is going to see a fairly rough life of tight parking spaces and rough streets.

Good idea in your opinion?

I test drove an 07 SES ZX3 except it was 5 speed. Nice car as usual its a little cheep on the inside but it was rated to get like 38 mgp highway (upto 43 mpg) so it definately covers the mpg area.

Thanks. Yea, I noticed the 07's are rated at slightly higher MPG's. Not sure how thats possible since its the same 2.0 engine and 4 speed auto tranny.

Rumor has it the difference is in the software. Probably added some lean burn fuel maps where it counts.

I cant comment on the MK1.5 focus too much, because I havent driven one. If I were going to get a second Focus to be my beater car though, the money you'd save picking up an 03 (for example) ATX will more than make up for the small difference in mileage. Then you really wont care if it picks up scratches. Shoot, you could even find a wagon and get a bit of utility you may find lacking in the Miata

EDIT: If you DO go used Focus instead, which makes a heck of a lot of sense to me personally, shoot for 02+. Near the end of the 2000-2004 run they (appear to have) gotten a little more reliable. 2000 and 2001 are years Ford would probably rather not own up to.

This might not be a popular statement, but I prefer the interiors from 05 on. A little more adult and refined. Guess I am getting old, haha.

I have looked at used models, but its hard to find models equipped with ABS I am noticing. If I do find one, that wasn't a rental car, I would be sure to have all fluids flushed and refilled with syn just in case.

Fluid on the Focus ATX is as easy to change as other vehicles, i.e., either drop the pan or use a commercial fluid exchange machine.

I believe the Focus still comes with a 100K 5 year powertrain warranty which covers the transmission, assuming you have it serviced as recommened, e.g., fluid at 30,000 miles.

yeah, they retuned the ecu in 07 for gas mileage where the 06's were tuned for emmissions. Basically, I don't know anything bout the auto trannys but I think the focus would fulfill all your other needs.
