the base Z4 is the same motor I have. Most guys recommend doing eBay headers since the performance difference between the big money one's isnt worth it.

the MB54B30 motor just doesn't respond well to whats available and unlike the e36 where M3 motor parts work on non M motors you're stuck with z4/330ci specific parts which have a very small aftermarket because most performance people go with the M right off the bat.

the Z4 3.0si would be a little extra power from a more efficient manifold and IIRC hotter cams but at best your going to add 10-15hp with NA mods like tuning/headers/exhaust/intake to the non M

cams will add another 15-20 if you're willing to take that step. but by then you'd have I'd guess at least $4500 into the engine and still be far behind a z4m.........although you could supercharger it with the leftover $550...

it'd be worth it if you have the money up front.

the z4 3.0si would still be a bundle of fun. One of my buddies has a Z4M and thats an entirely different beast all together.

my 330ci is fast enough that I didn't feel the need to modify the motor at all for a year.......the first car that's ever happened to me yet. put that same motor in a car, whack off 110lbs and make it more tail happy and it'd still be lots of fun.

that said if I had the capital this year I would've purchased an M3 instead.

and then on the other foot is the part where Timmy's car is one of the most fun auto-x cars I've ever driven and possibly the 2nd lowest HP car I've ever driven on the track so theres always that argument when it comes to if the base z4 is sufficient.

The base z4 drives like a big miata. Not as precise but just about as nimble. The 6 speed is excellent as well of course.
