The shock towers as so close to the firewall that strut tower braces (at least the front ones) are useless

Also someone on vortex posted a bachelor frog picture and the resulting discussion cracked me up

Yes, I realize it's a very good platform to begin with. This is why I bought it? Even still, it's not perfect. It WILL be seeing track use, so I'll be adding subframe reinforcement, strut tower braces, etc etc etc.
The first part of the rebuild was simply going to be springs, coilovers, rods/ends, ball joint, bearings, and bushings (possible ctrl arm replacement) and take it from there based on how it felt. I havent selected specific parts yet since I'm still doing research on which springs and adjustable damps I want to go with.

I'd love to be able to take this car to Grattan on weekends, and maybe do some auto-x with it, but that raises some serious questions about the spring rates I want to go with in the end.

Step 1.

Tires, above all else tires. a 100% bone stock focus on sticky top shelf tires is going to blow a fully built on shitty tires focus out of the water.

Step 2.

Driver Mod, seat time. Again, cannot stress this enough. there are guys you will be going to track days/auto-x's with that could drive a shopping cart around the track faster than a inexperienced driver can pilot a fully built focus.

Step 3.

Keep it simple. the more adjust ability/options you build into your car the more chance you have of adjusting things to be worse than stock.

you'd be shocked how many different types of common/popular "track" suspension setups there are on the market that perform far worse than a stock SVT setup. a high end Koni/Bilstein shock with a bigger rear sway bar and stock springs will out handle 90% of the off the shelf coilover/lowering kits you can buy.

will it keep the car as "flat" as a coil kit? nope, but maximum grip levels will be higher. and if you're after max performance thats what you need.

Step 4.

Know the difference between something that actually makes you faster and something that just makes you "feel" faster.

Theres a reason a bone stock G35 can get around an auto-x track faster than 90% of the highly modified built mustangs that come play.

Stiff suspension is great if you're racing on glass. if the track is bumpy you want something a bit softer that can actually flex and keep the tires on the ground.

Body roll =! slow handling.
Lack of body roll =! good handling.

theres lots more of course but most of it can be found online and I'm sick of typing.

When you are doing research on track builds make sure you're looking at actual racecar builds not just "race inspired" builds.

the guys that actually track their cars seem to have far less money into their cars than track inspired guys......yet they seem to be faster.

Thoughts?

http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/cto/3117420567.html

It can't tow the G.. and it doesn't get better milage than the G so it basically has none of the 'requirements' for a daily that I was looking for. But its clean as hell and classy and would be a pretty good car for a daily I'd bet... I dunno....

Yup!

thats a pretty killer combo for track use on pretty much every platform car.

That'd be hilarious, but by the time next year hits, i dont think the focus will be stock. I think i am going to fully gut the rear, and track prep it for both autox and rally x. And run it till i need AAA to get home.
