So..........for fixing BMW I'm looking at
$2000 in shop labor plus $1000 ish in parts or I could do it myself....still have the same $1000ish in parts plus I require at least $400 worth of special bmw tools which I do not currently have........tools/costs could get higher as I get into it. all told it's looking like a 25-30 hour job. do I DIY or do I just tow it to a shop and have them do it?

You have a DD Outback... If your in no real hurry to get back to auto-x'n then save the possible 1-1.5k and do that ish yourself..
If your lazy and want it running stat then take it to a shop

also at lunch am going to tack down complete parts list and just make sure the parts quote is in line with G.A.S. quoted me for parts. the timing system on this motor is extremely complex and I'm a little worried that if I dont get it right I'll ruin the motor and then wind up paying G.A.S. to re-do it for me again. thread for re-timing alone: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=904350 I'd need pretty much all these threads to do the job: https://www.google.com/search?q=proj...w=1020&bih=542

You could do everything but timing because that looks like one little thing wrong and bam.......
also also to be safe i would have shop do it but you know more about your bmw motor abilities then I. Ive never done anything close to that. |

I'd need these tools for sure:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-Tool-Van...06%26rk%3D1%26 I'm not 100% certain that BMW wouldn't be a total douche nozzle and require some other special pieces once I get into it.
