ya so me and the brads went out for a nice drive...

had klod ride with on the way up and had sneeze with on the way down...

we slowed down to drop the top because the little tiny bit of rain had stopped...

pretty much the NEXT sweeping left i overcooked it.

the rear tires lost traction (i think i might have tapped the brake) ended up in the ditch then something caught the rear end and the car swung around.

ended up on the far side of the ditch, on about a 30 degree incline...

popped it back in first, pulled out of the ditch...

some scuffs on the bumper and a dented exhaust tip but otherwise 0 damage.

drove it all the way back yesterday and it still drives great.

as for the other stuff...

the A/C doesn't work which kind of sucks... the trans tunnel gets SUPER hot when driving (i think there's some need for more insulation / the dust boot under the shifter might be torn/missing)... the hood has some minor dents, but otherwise it's in good shape.

Your story Timmay is what makes me want to stick with FWD. I don't track or autocross much, but I do tend to blast back roads. I find fwd is way easier to push hard when you are unfamiliar with a road. acceleration = understeer, brakes = over steer. I would be way more comfortable in a FWD car than a RWD car on the dragon or similar roads. (AWD would be awesomes, but I doubt I'll buy an AWD car.)

well the miata is a wonderful platform but here are ALL the mistakes i made in that corner:

1) i pushed a car running at least 2 different kinds of tires
2) i pushed a downhill corner really hard (too fast, and i need to brake even HARDER)
3) i braked mid-turn

so to be honest, i had done 2 previous runs on that same road in that same car and had 0 issues... difference is i hadn't just dropped the top and then decided i really wanted to go for it.

in the end it was an unfortunate incident, but the car is mechanically fine, only mildly damaged and i have learned to back off. besides all those other mistakes i need to work on fixing...

the miata is a good RWD car, and it tells you everything... i had slid both ends out on earlier drives and had no problem recovering... this corner was a bad combo of too fast/brake in turn/downhill

learned my lesson i did.

I agree. with RWD you're much better off going slower rather than pushing too hard. Aku took it pretty mild on the way back although was still quick.

doesn't much matter though. if you push too much you'll wind up in the other lane just as easily as you would with RWD and on roads like we were running being in the other lane regardless of if you pushed there or oversteered there will still be pretty dangerous/potentially deadly

AWD on those roads is absolutely insane. what I observed is that its definitely the fastest platform for mountain driving but with something mildly quick like the WRX or the A4 you can get on the power so early that you wind up in the next corner before the car has hardly straightened out and you've had time to regain focus on the road (WOT in 2nd gear around a corner with no wheel spin makes it hard to maintain focus on the road)
what we saw in that case was courtney wasn't reacting fast enough and would wind up getting on the brakes too late and would wind up pushing through or overshooting the next corner.

it is fun to come slingshotting out of a corner though. I want an EVO
