tranny chatter

My friends 2000 zx-3 manual tranny chatters or atleast it sounds like it when he is at idle. He has been told that it is normal by ford mechanics. I was wondering if this is normal. Also he installed his clutch and he forgot to lock his wheel. His steering wheel is a little off center. How much would that cost to fix and would he have to take it to a custom shop to fix that or would he be able to take it to a ford dealership? Thanks

Hmm, a 2000? Has he tried getting the tranny fluid changed? I've heard that shakiness is sort of a common problem with Fords.... although the 2 of mine that's needed it were both autos, but it's an idea- they got better after the fluid switch.

It is idler gear chatter. It is caused by the necessary play in the gears in the gearbox causing a slight noise, under the wrong conditions, as they chatter together. Aparently, Escorts used to suffer with something similar. It is a normal noise for the MTX 75 transmission and not a problem just a charateristic of the transmissioin. Unless your transmission is malfunctioning I'd say don't worry about it. However, it wouldn't hurt to have a Ford mech listen to it to make sure it is the idler gear chatter you are hearing.
Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.
