I have a 2000 SE that I bought brand new in 2000 and it now has 70000+ miles and has been pretty much nothing short of a joy. I have taken it in for all of the factory recalls but never had any other probs. I say go for it especially if the mechanic gives you the thumbs up. Just my .02 ;-)

You're doing the right thing by asking other driver's opinions. My first car was an 80s BMW 3 series. I thought it was the fastest car on the road until I learned a few things. If you're looking for speed Don't get the Focus.
You can see how fast cars are here http://car-videos.com
Here's some sporty cars that would make make great first cars. They're cheap too.
Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX/GS-T
Honda Civic SI
Honda Prelude SH
Honda Prelude VTEC
Honda Del Sol VTEC
Acura Integra GSR
Ford Mustang GT
Chevrolet Camaro Z28
Volkswagen GTI VR6
Toyota MR2
Toyota Celica
Nissan 240SX
Nissan Sentra SE-R
Nissan 200SX SE-R
Nissan 300ZX
Subaru SVX
Focus ZX3
Dodge Neon R/T
Mazda Miata
I recommend getting a stick shift for your first car. If you think you'll like to drive fast you need to know how to use the stick.

I don't know if I would agree with all the cars an Infras list. I've seen new drivers get in enough trouble driving a slow Fiesta, not to mention a Mustang GT.

Yea, a 300zx for your first car? are you crazy? Don't get a car like that, because your gonna end up crashing or getting in an accident. Most people crash or get in an accident in there first car. I did

I dunno. I think a Stealth VR4 would be a bit much.

Yes a 2000 Ford Focus SE is a good choice for a new driver. Hopefully it has the zetec engine and has all recall work done. I have had zero engine trouble with my car. Just change the oil and filter every 3k miles and don't drive it like a maniac and it should run like a dream.

Yes, it would be a great choice for a first car, just have your mechanic give it the once over.. The one problem I had with that list was...this is a young man, first car, some of those cars would kill him in insurance

BTW..welcome to the board...buy the focus...you"ll love it. It has a good aftermarket if you get into modifying your car, and we can def. help you with that!

Thanks for the responses

It's nice to get some good opinions about the Focus. Like Viney said, insurance is very expensive for me. Just for the Focus, it will cost me $2300 a year with minimum coverage + theft. I don't have a job right now so my savings won't last me too long either. I have heard good things lately about the car and my mom did the carfax on it too and it came out clean. It is a really good deal and all but I am going to have to get a secure job first (other than mowing old people's lawn) lol. My other choices would be a 1995 Dodge Avenger 5sp for $2500 or a 1997 Buick Skylark GS for $4200 with everything in it. Or otherwise I just wait and stay on my parents policy on a 98 Jeep Cherokee and 01 Sebring. But thanks for some incite on the Focus and hopefully I will test drive it this weekend.
