Sputtering

Picked my brother up from school today, on the way back I was going maybe 50mph and stuck it in neutral, coasted a bit, and braked kinda hard.

Anyway, as I slowed down the engine started sputtering like I was stalling but I engaged the clutch (transmission was still in neutral) and it stopped. After that the car seemed to be idling a bit rougher than normal.

What's the first thing I should take a look at? It's a 2002 so I don't think the fuel pump issue is a factor, maybe the throttle body or a dirty intake? Even a MAF? Let me know what you guys think.

PS- Yes, it sounded like in cartoons/movies where right before a car backfires and dies it sputters a whole lot.

Try disconnecting the battery for at least 15 minutes to reset the ECU.

I know on some cars, if you hit the brakes too hard, it will cause the car to stall and whatnot.

I would reset the ECU first then go from there as micro stated.

Wow really?

I mean I didn't stand on the brakes, not near enough to lock them up or anything. But I guess it can't hurt.

Unplugged the battery, I'll let you guys know how it runs when I get back from working out.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Fixed it, I think.

I haven't been able to replicate the original problem, but the idle seems to be smoothed out a bit.

Should I look into getting some cam gears to unlock some power and hopefully even the idle out a bit?
