5th and reverse gear gone!

UK Focus 99 2.0 5 door and driving home today had a lot of trouble getting 5th gear and when I got home found I cannot get reverse at all.

All other gears are ok, no clonking or strange noises....is the box cattled or is it something simpler? Any ideas anyone?

FTF (First Things First).

Check the linkage and shifting cables.

P.S. I am not familiar with the Focus manual gearbox, but I greatly doubt that Reverse has a synchronizer.

Thanks for replies, car gone into Fords today will post later what it was. Seems a common problem because they had a Galaxy and a Fiesta with same problems.

Problem fixed today it was 5th/reverse spring lever broken so they have removed it, and it now works ok. Cost 131 They say it should be OK now, however if the problem comes back it will need a new housing which is 320 plus VAT plus labour.

Thanks for replies and help.

if the problem comes back that means they didn't really fix it and you shouldn't have to pay for it

Sounds like a temporary "fix" to me.

Well the question has to be that the box works fine without it so what is the original part doing in there if it is not actually used? Unless it is used for a different version of gearbox. The alternative is wait a week for a new housing, pay 320 plus VAT plus labour which amounts to 600 plus.

Worth a try for 131 dont you think?

If the 5th gear/reverse spring lever broke, not allowing you to shift into 5th or reverse, then the spring lost its compression. Normally when they break, you're either stuck in 5th or in reverse and your reverse lights will stay on.

Anyway, the point of the spring is to make it harder to accidently shift into 5th or reverse. Now with the spring gone, it is more possible for the shifter to slip into reverse as you shift into 3rd or 4th. But if you know where you're gears are, you'll be fine.

But honestly, they probably should have replaced the spring itself. It's not a common problem nowadays and you'd think a small spring wouldn't be more than a few bucks.
