Silly question

I'm wondering is a 17" rim more likely to be damaged than a 16" rim. I'm pondering upgrading I know the 16" tires are definately cheaper.

When you increase the size of your rim, you usually end up choosing a lower profile tire.

I suppose that the rim would be in more danger of getting damaged with a lower profile tire, say, if you hit a pothole or something.

ummm... trust me on this one, if u live in an area that has a lot of potholes then go with 16 or if u go with 17's get fat tires because once u hit a pothole you will either blow a tire or bend a rim. Please take my advice, I have gone thorugh both situations.
