yeah, I think we discussed that article a while ago and came up with a conclusion that they were getting bum readings from the dyno

well i bought my zx3 focus because it was only 5500 @ 62000miles(dealer); I wanted a cheap car, with good gas mileage that had lots of aftermarket crap i could put on it. I wont be tradeing it for an SVT because they are more money than I wanted to get a car loan for and they are very difficult to find where I live. They are nice cars and I like the fact the the motor puts on 170 hp(at crank) on all motor, while at the same time being reliable and driveable. I would like to do the same to my car. Now that I am paying my car down, rather than trading it off and just going into debt some more, I am just going to have fun with the car I have and add parts to it, to see how fast I make it go down the quarter mile. Hopefully 15.5 this summer is my goal.

hey crazymechanic thanks allot for your specs,
Im not familiar with variable cam timing, I have head about it before and have some basic ideas of what it is but I am not entirely sure. What exactly is it and how does it work?

What is the compression ratio of a SVT motor? The 00' Zetec has 9.6 to 1; which isnt too bad! But I think I still would like to deck the cylinder head for a little extra compression ratio. Do they sell the 'extra thin' head gaskets for zetecs? That gasket might give me a little extra boost in compression ratio too.
I am intrested in a cam change, but my car is a daily driver so I can't have anything too crazy.
On average what are stage 2 cams like, I dont want anything too lumpy or skitzophrenic. Any reliablity problems with aftermarket cams for this motor?

My only problem is with the computer tune, I will probably be adding a nitrous kit eventully and advancing my timing with no2 is a bad idea.

VCT changes the cam's profile at a given point in the powerband, typically either causing both valves to open/close simultaneously (when before one would open before and close after the other) or changes the cam's duration/lift. This is accomplished by a solenoid on the camshaft that pushes the shaft over, moving a different lobe profile onto the valves. The benefit is the valves open further/longer at high RPMs, allowing the engine to breathe better at the top of the band while not sacrificing economy or drive quality at the bottom or middle of the band. Its basically the same as having a mild grind cam from idle to 3000-4000 RPMs, and then switching to a more aggressive profile from 4000 RPMs to redline.

AFAIK its not possible to swap a SVT head onto a standard Zetec block, but for what its worth there's other mods you could do that would yield more gains. You have to figure that all of the differences between the two engines only resulted in 40 more HP/TQ over a standard Zetec, so any given change (such as VCT) is only going to result in miniscule gains. Most of the SVT Zetec's extra power lies in the free-flowing intake/exhaust setup and higher compression ratio...VCT is something of icing on the cake.

It's probably an unfair comparison because I had winter tires on at the time, but from a stop he clearly had the advantage. Once up to speed, I had the advantage. Nobody was "killing" anybody, but he pulled away quicker off the line and I was pulling when I was in 3rd - perhaps the rear tires that were installed backwards (directional tread) on lantings car helped him on the launch and hurt him at speed (you fix that btw?). It was all done in fun anyways. I know my car isn't the fastest. If I wanted a fun car, I'd find an inexpensive ZX3, gut the interior (remove back seat at least) and do a V8 conversion... probably should have went that route... be about the same price as my SVT with the goodies (what I'm looking at doing at least).
lol...that was a fun day..to bad we didn't really get to race, just playaround on teh highway on the friggen coldest day of teh year!!..lol..

o, and my mods were a CAI, 65mm TB, UDP, un-tuned cam gears, 2.5 flex, and MBRP cat-back.(i think that's all teh mods...o, and fouled plugs...lol...)
anyways, u def. had the advantage in the top end..and yes, i did switch those two tires around..

i'm gonna have to run u agian tho, got my race header on last week...adjusted the cam gears some...and dam this focus is loud...lol..
anyways...itz all in good fun...but i think w/ all the bolt-ons, u could prolly lay waste to a stock SVT..

Cool! Yeah it was friggin cold! My car didn't like turning over that day, but it did eventually! We'll have to go for a ride in your car sometime. I want to see how much stiffer your setup is over the SVT.

I need to get tires mounted on my new rims so I can play! Hoping we get enough snow tomorrow so I can do it during the day. I hope the snow melts soon so I can have a fun because I SOOOOOOO want to start playing around again!
