ZETEC all the way.Like everyone has said, 4 large will buy you enough speed goodies to whip the stock Duratec.The Duratec may be "newer" but that does not make it better.Everyone said the 5.0 was dead.Guess what? Ford just came out with The BEST small block ever made to date.Dead my a$$! Long live the Zetec and the 302.

Yeah don't waste your money swapping the engine, invest in what you have. 4k goes a long way, just budget it out before you spend it :-D |

^ I also have an '88 Mustang GT convt..I have the weight down to 3125lbs and the power up to 485hp.Looking at buying that new Boss block for a screaming motor build.Currently run 11.8's on 10" slicks,but would love to see low 10's with rock soild durability.I plan to autocross the car some this year too.Might give my SE a run for its money...

Stock lower end is what is currently IN my car,with 120k miles,30k being force fed.The stock lower end is one tough SOB in these cars.Many..MANY 1/4 miles,without incident.The pistons and rods are factory Ford forged and the crank super-sturdy high nodular iron.I have been turning up the power level for years just waiting for something to pop,but it just keeps on running smooth with good oil pressures and minimal leakdown.I figure I am on borrowed time and actually have a 347 stroker ready to drop in,but am now thinking about doing a really sick motor with the Boss block as a foundation.Nothing like a SBF spinning @8.5k rpm's to boil your blood....

like any other older motor u have to know if the block can take the stress of all the work if it can then i would stick with the ztec cause it fits and everything lines up ( motor mounts tranny/hoses and wiring ...) i would be taking on more than i could deal w/ if all of that is involved
if the block cant handle it then look into a new one that is a direct swap and then start from scratch and take ur time, cause ur car runs and u dont have to hurry it will take a lot of stress out of the project and u can handle a set back w/o anything horrid
