The C170 Platform is Ford's compact car automobile platform from the late 1990s. It was used in the Ford Focus. It was replaced with the Ford C1 platform in 2004 in Europe, but will continue through the end of the decade on American Ford Focuses.


C1 platform

The C1 (or Volvo P1) is Ford's global compact car automobile platform. It replaces (and is loosely based on) Ford's C170 platform and Mazda's BJ platform. The C1 platform debuted with the European Ford Focus C-Max MPV in early 2004. It will be extended as the EUCD for future midsize cars.

The C platform was designed in Cologne, Germany as the "C Technologies Program". 30 engineers each from Mazda, Ford, and Volvo worked to combine the small-car engineering from all three automakers.

The platform is designed for either front- or all wheel drive. It is very adaptable, though, and will be stretched as the EUCD for use in future Volvo vehicles. It was even modified for rear wheel drive to create the Ford D2C platform for the next Ford Mustang. Volvo's plans call for all of their cars to be C1, EUCD, or D3-based in the coming years.

Among all of the cars, the floorpan is different, but the front- and rear-subframes, suspension, steering, braking, safety, and electrical components are shared.

CD2 Platform

The Ford CD2 platform (called U204 internally) is an automobile platform for crossover SUVs. It is the basis for the Mazda Tribute, Ford Escape, and Mercury Mariner, and was the first automobile platform jointly developed by Mazda and Ford. The design was based on Mazda's GF platform, used by the Mazda Capella/626.

CD2 is a front wheel drive platform with an all wheel drive option. Tributes and Escapes are manufactured at Mazda's Hofu, Yamaguchi and Ford's Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Missouri. A Mercury Mariner version was briefly produced at the Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake, Ohio, but this line was halted in mid-2005 to allow the plant to convert to Ford Econoline production.

CD3 Platform

The CD3 is Ford's global midsize car automobile platform. It was designed by Mazda in association with Ford and debuted with the Mazda Mazda6 sedan in early 2003. Mazda refers to the CD3 platform as GG/GY. The platform is designed for either front- or all wheel drive. Ford also plans to add a Hybrid powertrain on the platform, and the 2009 minivan V2 platform will use CD3 as its base.

Ford insiders claim that this platform, developed in Japan by Mazda, is primarily for the North American market. Although there will eventually be 10 different vehicles on the platform, only the Mazda6/Atenza will be sold outside North America. Ford reportedly spent just US$1,000,000,000 on development of all ten CD3 models, which is about what the company would have spent on each model if they were developed independently.

Note that there is also a Ford D3 platform which different from the CD3 and is based on Volvo technology. For the European market, this is the larger platform of choice, while the Ford C1 platform (jointly developed by Ford, Mazda, and Volvo) is taking the lower end. Volvo, European Ford, Jaguar, and Land Rover will base their future midsize cars on an extended version of the C1 called the EUCD.

The long wheelbase "C1-Plus" version of C1 will be called EUCD internally. It was chosen by Ford's European operations instead of the Mazda-designed CD3 platform due to the large number of components shared with the smaller C1. Another factor was reportedly the inability of the CD3 to accept Volvo's straight-5 engines. The first EUCD car, Volvo's C70, will be built by Pininfarina Sverige AB in Sweden.

D3 Platform

The D3 (or Volvo P2) is Ford's global full size car automobile platform. It was designed by Volvo in association with Ford and debuted with the Volvo S80 sedan in early 1999. The platform is designed for either front- or all wheel drive with an extended wheelbase option.

Ford's D3 is slightly different from Volvo's P2. It features steel, rather than aluminum, suspension arms, and other cost-saving measures. Ford's D3 vehicles are built at Chicago Assembly in Chicago, Illinois and were to also be built at Atlanta Assembly in Atlanta, Georgia. However, with the announced closure of that plant, Ford will consolidate all Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln D3 production in Chicago.

Note that there is also a Ford CD3 platform which is different and is based on Mazda technology.

Sales of Ford's Freestyle crossover SUV, while initially strong, have slowed. The company was to introduce a Mercury-branded version in 2007, but the Freestyle will instead be redesigned and take on an appearance similar to the recent Ford Fairlane concept and be earmarked to replace Ford's current minivans, the Freestar and, its Mercury sibling, the Monterrey. The Fairlane concept was originally built on the CD3 platform but it was decided that the 2007 Ford Edge crossover will make use of this platform instead. To avoid redundancy with the Edge with the prospect of a CD3-based Fairlane, the redesigned Freestyle will adopt elements of the Fairlane concept and effectively become a production version of the concept, though it will retain the Freestyle name and remain on the D3 platform. The Mercury version will no longer be produced.

D2C Platform

The D2C (also known as DC2 and S197) is Ford's newest global rear wheel drive automobile platform. It was designed by Ford with Mazda's C1 platform technology and debuted in the 2005 Ford Mustang. The platform basics are a MacPherson strut suspension in front and 3-link solid axle in the rear with a Panhard rod. The 2007 high performance Special Vehicle Team (SVT) Mustang variation, called the Shelby GT500, will not include the traditional SVT-designed independant rear suspension, but will also have the solid rear axle. Engines include a 4.0 L V6 and Ford's Modular 4.6 L V8, and a supercharged 5.4 L Modular V8 in the GT500.

Contrary to many news reports, this platform is not based on the Ford DEW platform. The Mustang was to have used a "Lite" version of the DEW98, but that plan was scrapped as too expensive. The differences are most noticeable in the suspension: The DEW uses a 4-wheel independent double wishbone suspension. The D2C's high-mounted MacPherson struts and lower wishbones are identical to the front wheel drive C1, and even in the rear the trailing arm is carried over from the C1.

Panther Platform

The Panther platform is Ford Motor Company's large, rear wheel drive sedan automobile platform. It uses traditional body-on-frame construction. It was introduced in 1978 for the 1979 model year. During trying periods for Ford it was scheduled for cancellation on several occasions, as early as 1985, but its appeal to some customers endures, and the Panther platform is still in production as of 2006.

The first Panthers were the Ford LTD and Mercury Marquis. Both were available in coupe, wagon, and sedan bodies. In 1981, the Lincoln Town Car was converted to the Panther platform. The Lincoln coupes lasted only two years, but Ford and Mercury coupes lasted until 1987, and wagons until 1991. After that, only four-door sedans were produced.

2008

DaimlerChrysler and General Motors have begun moving back toward rear wheel drive for their premium models, whereas Ford never changed its Panther-based models. While there is no real evidence and conflicting reports on the future of the Panther platform, Ford is rumored to be considering replacing the Panther platform with a derivative of the Australian Ford Falcon in 2008. This would be the replacement for the Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis, while the Town Car would be replaced with an all wheel drive sedan based on the Ford D3 platform.

- It seems the fate of Freestyle is decided to become THE 3 row people mover for Ford... and Meta One will I guess not happen.
- good going for Ford by saving all the moeny on CD3 vehicles.. it cost them 105 of what it would have otherwise...

The "next" Mustang is the current 2005+ model:

The D2C (also known as DC2 and S197) is Ford's newest global rear wheel drive automobile platform. It was designed by Ford with Mazda's C1 platform technology and debuted in the 2005 Ford Mustang.

So, ironically, all the people who whine about how Ford won't bring over the C1 platform and all Ford cares about is the Mustang, are bashing a car that is based on C1 technology. The new Mustang really is new, it hardly shares anything with the older models.

I had always read that the new '05 Mustang was based on a heavily reengineered DEW98 platform. This is a version of the chassis architecture that underpins the Lincoln LS, Jaguar S-Type, and the most recent Thunderbird (the retro one that didn't sell). Too bad Ford cheaped out on the independent rear suspension for the Mustang...
