Auto Trunk Release Trouble

I was just wondering if anyone has ever had a problem with the trunk release latch. When I push the button it sounds like it is trying to release about 3 or 4 times but it does not release. I can open it manually with the key. Minor problem I know, but the wife uses the key fob to open it alot with her hands full. 2003 SE sedan. Thanks, Dan

We have that happen quite often here at my dealership and we usually replace the latch and the striker.

Exclamation

Our trunk latch has ceased working (seems like a common problem). It no longer latches closed.

I have purchased a replacement trunk latch assembly from Ford for our Focus.
BUT I need to move the key cylinder from the old latch to the new latch.

I can not figure out how to remove the cylinder widget from the old unit. The key cylinder needs to rotate slightly to disengage from the latch. A pin is currently preventing the cylinder from rotating. I have no idea how to retract the pin without demolishing the latch.

Please help!!!!!

Thanks!

PS. Somewhere on this site i saw a scanned picture of the latch assembly (item # 6) also showing the key cylinder (#?).

Have you tried putting the key in the cylinder and pushing in on the pin?

How do i "push on the pin"?

see the attached photo.

Summary: i need to remove the key module from the latch so i can transfer it to a new latch.

the key cylinder module is a cast metal module. It has an internal pin on the 'right' side that prevents the whole cylinder module from rotating. The pin resides in the bulge on the right side of the cylinder module in the photo. I can see the small pin if i look in the small gap between the cylinder module and the stamped steel back of the latch assembly.

In attempt to retract the pin i have tried various key positions and also poking a metal rod in a suspicious looking hole on the opposite side of the latch. Nothing has been succesful.

I've tried various combinations of key positions without luck.

I'm stuck!!!

I'd say, go see an expert. Either a locksmith, or a Ford mechanic. There must be some way to retract the pin or there would be no way to get it in. I'd say that the suspicious hole has something to do with it... however, what to do... I have no idea. It might require a special tool of some sort that a locksmith or a Ford mechanic would have access to. Also, pushing in the wrong way could damage the internals and then even someone with the tool couldn't get it out

Let us know what you can find out... in case someone else has a problem like this in the future. I'm sorry I couldn't be more help.

Removing rear latch cylinder

Remove the metal plate from the back of the latch. To do this, pop the four plastic tabs loose. Get a big flat screwdriver and pry off the metal plate. It will be stuck around the two studs. Once the inside of the metal plate is exposed, you can push in the retaining pin on the cylinder housing and rotate the housing to remove it.

While you're at it, you might want to check to see that the latch arms will not be compressed by the metal plate.
