2002 Focus Auto trans issue auto

Ok my girlfriend has a 02 Focus LX sedan with a 2.0 duratec and auto trans. well it seems very soft when it shift almost as to be slipping between gears. I think thats just how most of the ford transmissions are. But also say your maybe around 15-20 MPH and you put it to the floor. It will actually feel like it's neutral dropping in a sence and bang 1st hard and slightly squeel the tires. it did squeel the tires I actually saw the mark in the rearview mirror on the road. is there any problems with it or is this common? Also does anyone make an electronic shift kit for it? I know b&m has a shiftplus for my cavalier. I'm just worried that her trans is on the way out also the car is not really beat on hard and only has 41,XXX on it.

I don't think Duratech engines cam in 2002, so you must mean Zetec.

Anyway, I have had many ford with Auto's ant they have all had their little quirks. What you are explaining can be attributed to the way Ford designed the focus stock. The throttle body have an offset plate to ease acceleration. They designed the car to be putz around town. So when you mash the throttle (WOT) then the engine is starved for air for a short time. Just my 2 cents.

BTW, Help your girlfriend. Get her a Cold Air Intake and SCT Tune (Chip). That will help out alot.

It is deff not a Zetec thats for sure it has 2.0 single port on the valve cover. if it's a Zetec it's a lot different design and power difference than my buddies ZX2

Your gf has the 2.0 Spi motor as that's the only engine offered on the baseline LX. I don't know if the transmission should be shifting into first though. I think first is just for moving from a dead stop. Mine usually shifts into 2nd in that situation.

Something like this really needs to be diagnosed in-person by a good reliable transmission shop. There are a number of relatively minor things that could be causing this, but somebody who knows what they're doing needs to drive the car.

She really got screwed with the car. Her stepdad basicly forced her to get it. Granted it was better then her 89 Ford Tempo. This car has been hit very hard in the front end. It's missing randon plastic pieces for the front end. The lower perch on the strut for the spring is bent. The 2.0 has a nice lifter chatter to it. The cat rattles pretty loudly I guess it's the shield. Like I stated is has 41,xxx on it. I would also like to firm up the shift some though as this thing is an extremely soft shifting car. I know it's a family car but with it being that soft it has to be hard on the trans and the internals.
