I recently went up to the dealership and told them about this problem and they printed out a notice that ford had sent out calling it normal operation...thanks ford thats very useful. You would think they would at least attempt to fix it some how but to just say its normal operation thats just weak. Although truth fully I dont really notice it much anymore since I just turn the key to the on position while I do seat belt and everything else before starting but even then one in a long while it still does a long crank.

19126 2005-2006 FOCUS - INTERMITTENT LONG CRANK TIMES

SOME 2005 FOCUS (MTX-75 TRANSMISSIONS WITH LATEST CALIBRATION PER TSB 05-9-16) OR 2006 FOCUS (ALL TRANSMISSIONS) MAY EXHIBIT INTERMITTENT LONG CRANK TIMES (UP TO 5 SECONDS) ON INITIAL START WITH NO MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) AND NO DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC'S) PRESENT. THIS IS NORMAL OPERATION AND NO REPAIR IS RECOMMENDED. FAILURE TO CRANK THE ENGINE UNTIL IT STARTS (UP TO 5 SECONDS) MAY RESULT IN LONGER CRANK TIMES OR HARD TO START CONCERNS ON SUBSEQUENT STARTING ATTEMPTS. IF THIS CONCERN OCCURS REFER TO THE OWNER'S GUIDE FOR FURTHER ENGINE STARTING INFORMATION. IF VEHICLE STILL FAILS TO START OR STILL EXHIBITS HARD STARTING CONCERNS REFER TO THE PC/ED MANUAL FOR DIAGNOSTICS.

I bought a used 2003 ZX3 in Dec. of 2004. By March of 2005 I had to have a new tranny put in, but ford paid for it. They even told me that the trannys were going out in the 03's for some reason. I was pretty pissed since i had only had the car for about 3 months... :( Its doing fine now.

I have an issue with my 03 PZEV where it cranks but doesn't actually start. This problem is completely random and there seem to be no conditions that cause it. The thing is, I have the ATX, sooo I'm not sure if this thread is talking about the same thing.

So wouldn't this long cranking problem, mine does it too just I just leave the ignition in pos 2 for a few seconds before starting, cause starters to fail prematurely?
