The first SVT badged vehicle didn't have a boosted V8. The Cobra was naturally aspirated until 2003 (I think).

I think you get the drift though...up until the Focus, SVT hadn't turned out a vehicle with an I-4, and until the SVT Contour they hadn't made anything without a V-8. Take the "boosted" out and it rings true...their experience is with large, high-volume engines producing raw horsepower and vehicles designed for dragstrip use. The SVTC and SVTF are major departures from their usual staple of 300+ WHP V-8s.

They're simply the performance division at Ford - like AMG to Mercedes, SRT to Dodge, etc. I think their general mindset is to get the most performance out of the car with whichever engine suits (or fits) the car. The Mustang and F-150 could be had with V-8s, and that's a natural choice for their platform. The same goes with the Contour and Focus - do the best with what engine you have in your disposal, and adjust the suspension and drivetrain components to match the performance accordingly.

Now, I'm not comparing the meaning of an SVT badge say to something like an "M" badge in terms of performance tweaking, but it's a step above stock by all means. Ford has always had quirky little vehicles in their line-up over the years that really capture the hearts of a niche market. Now, if they would just get over themselves and the Mustang, they would open up a much greater performance market for all their other models. Too many other decent cars get held back because of the Mustang and its "status" symbol to the company.

Sure, its Ford's performance division, but all of their experience is with V8's. Until the SVTC (which was another Euro-clone of the ST200 Mondeo) they hadn't touched anything with less than 8 cylinders, which is why I say their experience lies with V8's. Everything that they actually made from a base vehicle (the Cobra and Lightning) was a V8, everything that had a SVT label on it with 6 or 4 cylinders was more or less just a rebadged European performance model with a different body and less features (like the ST170 headlight washers.)

Ha, I too like the Mustang, but to me it's just not a driver's car. It relies on its history and presence to do the talking. I think Ford just tries to make the Mustang be an all-around car rather than a car good at one or a few things. If you think about it, that's really how most of Ford's cars are designed. They try to appeal to too many markets instead of focusing on one (I think you may have actually stated that - or someone else). I look at Mazda and see the exact opposite philosophy for sales marketing. They have cars for specific markets. How two companies so closely related wind up with different marketing schemes baffles me.

Or maybe that is Ford's general market. Maybe they have consumers that don't really know what they want and try to get a good all-around car. I could see Ford falling into the same pitfall Cadillac has crawled itself out of - maybe not as extreme or as deep of a well, but you get the point.

I think most of them expect a car quite similar to what they're already driving and have a hard time relating to what a European Focus would be like versus an American one.
